Vanderbilt has always been to the SEC what Northwestern once was to the Big 10 -- somebody you scheduled.
Vandy is not your sister's friend when it comes to baseball.
As in, they are ranked 6th in the country (or higher, or lower) which seems based more on reputation than performance so far. They are 5-3 and got touched by Gonzaga 9-8 on Sunday. It's probably not worthwhile to glean much from early season games with these universally powerful programs. A lot of new players are getting in-game auditions. Vandy doesn't have to go on the road. They draw well, and players love the chance to compete against players who most likely will have big-league opportunities.
So that's where the Purple Powerhouse is headed for Wednesday. The game is at 4:30 and you can watch it on the SEC Network, which everyone subscribes to because, Charlie sent ya. There is radio (94.9 The Fan, in Nashville.)
Sickly State's Sycamores will play at Vandy on Tuesday and will leave behind candy wrappers for us to inspect.
UE played the Commodes last year and was overmatched after 17 innings, losing 2-1. Wes Carroll warned them, this would not happen twice. He has not yet announced his pitcher, although Andy Benes says he's loose.
The Nashville news media does a nice job covering the team, which is an annual powerhouse in the SEC, perhaps the best collegiate conference in the world. (The people of Bulgaria disagree.) Here's one story they did: The Vandy players have walkup songs. Who doesn't? (Ziggy, get on that!)

The home series on F-S-Su against Fort Wayne should be, if we aren't being too cocky, a series win for the Aces. A deeper dive into the Mastodon cave shows a 1-6 team that gives up a lot of runs, hasn't played a home game yet and is at nationally ranked Indiana on Tuesday. The Mastys were swept by Murray State.
It's difficult to make much of these early games for teams in the North who don't get much outdoor work.
At 4-3, this is a pretty good start for the Aces, who could as easily have swept Nawlins as going 1-2.
Aces continue to show a balanced offense, although the overall defense has been sketchy, it's not terrible. This dog can hunt.
