Albothepurple has posted numerous times in the men's thread about how the ladies should be able to recruit players within 100 miles and win more than 3 games. The current roster refutes this point. Twelve of the thirteen listed roster players are from basically within 160 miles of Evansville. I not certain where a couple of those towns are in Indiana but nevertheless they are Hoosiers. We also have a good representation from St. Louis and Louisville.
So, how does the women's program become competitive? Recruiting within the area hasn't worked. How do we replicate Kathi Bennett and Tricia Cullop's success?
Does anybody really know what time it is? Does anybody really care?

Honestly, I have only watched the womens team on TV this year, so I may be off....but I feel like there is some legitimate talent on that team. Lola Bracy, Makayla Wallace and the freshman sensation Abby Feit appear to be really nice players. I think it really comes down to coaching. Ruffing appears completely lost. No adjustments that I can tell during a game, absolutely no fire, or passion. I have never seen him utter a word to the community or a plug for the team or similar. Bennett and Cullop were both passionate and visible. Recently, the MVC tweeted that they were proud that 9 of the 10 coaches in our league were women, and that was the highest percentage in Division 1. IMO, it really needs to be all 10. I am not being sexist, but I think a woman can relate to the players better. If nothing else, grab one of the two female assistants and give them a chance at the conference tournament. There is absolutely nothing to lose by doing it.

Certainly Bennett and Cullop had success but this was a long time ago, maybe not as long as the men's dry spell but certainly a decade or more it seems like. Gotta find a coach who can recruit and get the community involved. Would not take tons of fans to fill up the gym on campus. Male or female, white or black, young or middle aged, get the best coach you can get.

Anyone think there may be any mutual interest between our new staff and Emily Sullivan? I heard she has one maybe 2 years left and is in the transfer portal out-of Florida. Started her career at UNC, played for memorial hs--just a thought..one of our weaknesses is probably a true post player and she would fit that bill

Gotta say, in my own defense, that it's not the players who are ON the roster from inside 150 miles, it's the players who are NOT on the roster from within 150 miles. I never insisted that every player in the Tri-State belongs on the UE roster but there is plenty of evidence to suggest we could find 10 girls inside 100 high schools to make this team better.
That also doesn't mean they can't bring in a player from Texas or Florida.
If you can't sell a college program to a girl who is within an hour's drive of the campus, you are just not doing your job.
I refuse to believe there aren't a dozen young women from an area west to St. Louis, north to Indy, east to Cincy and south to Nashville who can't make this a better team. You don't need to get all of them.

You don't need to get all of them. This area is absolutely a hotbed of wbb talent. Indiana, ky, tenn, ill, miz, Ohio is one of the best areas for mid major recruiting in the whole country. Of course..there are a crap ton of mid to low major teams in the area too. What I tend to notice about the best mid majors is that the roster is about 60% local/regional talent and 40% foreign/long distance/transfers. The local kids can help with fan support, and the occasional p5 transfer always adds a nice buzz around the program..and when you are building a program these days you have to find kids that can elevate the program now so that in the future when a good player comes out to play ball in the area they actually consider UE. The reason I mentioned sullivan is because she didn't get much playing time for unc or Florida, and may be looking to transfer down a level to get more pt. And her being from evansville was a plus. Of course I cant wait to see what type of players she adds as it will help us gain more insight into what we will be seeing on the court this winter

Based on coach saying she wands to play fast and press...we will need at least another PG and definitely a few bigs..the thought of playing more than 5 players consistently is exciting on its own since Ruffing never could seem to figure that out

Again, as basketball goes, women don't have -- as a rule -- an option to play the game at the pro level. Wanting to win is maybe not a topic, but getting an education should be.
If a girl wants to go to UConn or Stanford and sit the bench for 4 years while the chosen players run up 39-0 records, they sure don't need my permission. The best ones will get some kind of contract in the "W" and ... that's all there is.
But if they want to play regularly on a team that has a chance to win 60 percent of its games, do a little traveling, be in the mix for some tournament play -- and all the while get a basketball scholarship to study any one of a dozen competitive curricula -- exactly HOW does a head coach not get players who can win more than a few games a year?
If there are 20 or more young women in Indiana or Illinois who see that as a real nice opportunity, why are they going somewhere else to achieve that very goal? Are the studies at other universities better than UE? Nah ... it's that the UE women's program isn't attractive. Why has that been? We know why. What we wonder is why it took so long to address the problem. Let's hope the damage can be repaired.
Eventually, a UE women's player will get her number in the rafters. Why not be that first player? Seriously, it will not get better than that and if you believe otherwise, I'd recommend the lowlands property just south of the red spot on Jupiter.
I wish this outfit the best and I endeavor to support their journey. I did see that the women's golf team won the conference. Could be, a few of them decide to play an LPGA round or two.

As an aside, the USI women got an upgrade, according to the C-P. I will snip a bit since that's copyright theft to do more.
Tori Handley, a 5-10 guard, joins the Screaming Eagles after playing her first two years at SIU-Edwardsville -- a D1 program in the Ohio Valley Conference. Handley is from Jeffersonvile.
Handley appeared in 24 games for the Cougars as a sophomore with nine starts. She averaged 3.8 points, 1.8 rebounds and 0.5 assists.
The Screaming Eagles will return the majority of players from last year's squad that finished the season 11-5 before they had to withdraw from the GLVC tournament due to COVID-19 issues. They didn't receive an at-large bid to the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional.

It’s been said that the women’s recruiting will include international prospects. She sounds as if her recruiting web will go a lot farther than 150 miles. She has I believe as many as 8 scholarships available so let’s hope she can snag a few good ones to build the program.

I am probably wrong, but I believe our jaws are going to drop when we see some of the talent that comes to the lady Aces. Coach has folks on her side from every stop she’s made, so referrals will help. If Tyra is retained, she will be a roll model as a “local” woman who was successful; not at UE, but the example translates. I wouldn’t be surprised to see us get a couple of ladies from the Chicago market, maybe FL or NC. An international big? Coach certainly seems confident that this is a potential area, and Davidson has tapped Scandinavia for years, so there is a connection.
Yes, there is always competition for players, but UE has a lot to sell, and this is not like recruiting a football team; 3-4:good kids each year, and an occasional transfer? Who knows, in a couple of years, we may well contend in the MVC. With our new coach and her strategy, this is a bet I’d take.

R-S mentioned the international 'market,' which seems like a foreign word to Ruffing. I was intrigued by the comment almost at once, but there isn't much to truly evaluate.

He got those 2 foreign kids year before last and one was pretty good and he ran them off before they even played in 5 games.. And since I didn't see a general recruiting thread I kind of turned this into one..another name just appeared in the portal, kendall wingler- one player that was really considering UE now left without a coach at eku..could be a nice addition as well. The kids are out there and im confident we will land talent! There is too much out there! Admittedly our problem hasn't been attracting talent so much as setting the players up to succeed. Watching them last season it seems they didn't even practice very fundamental things (such as making good strong passes, taking care of the ball, getting shooting reps in) One summer (3 seasons ago?)I saw that they had a contest to reward shooting outside of practice ...and after the whole summer was over, the winning player had barely gotten in 500 extra shots..for reference the best shooters probably take 500 extra shots almost every day outside of practice time. They just need to raise the bar..off the floor--we will see results

I did not see that she had entered the transfer portal but did find this article when she committed to EKU: www.thenewsenterprise.com/sports/girls-basketball-wingler-commits-to-eku/article_0a03e6e2-d146-5c91-b7e9-6c556f835201.htmlSounds like she would play the two or three if she came. Also in the article all of the answers she gave for going to EKU sounds like they could apply to Evansville now. Her final five were: “ Wingler chose Eastern Kentucky University over Murray State, North Alabama, BYU and Evansville.” I also think in high school she averaged over 30 a game and was in the running for Kentucky Ms. Basketball, if I am not mistaken. Sounds like someone Tyra could connect with as they had similar situations in high school.

A player like her (and she isn't the only one like that out there) could be our "tyra" per say and be the player whose success brings in a new generation of talent. Would be a mutually beneficial relationship so I hope there is some interest on both ends
