| In-Game Links | Anthony/CP | Jevin | UE Men's Basketball | MVC Standings | Evansville | Home Page | Roster | Schedule | Stats | Valparaiso | Home Page | Roster | Schedule | Stats | Line | Covers.com Odds | Notes | This is a matchup of two 1-5 MVC teams. Valpo is coming off their first conference win at Illinois State 59-50 while Evansville is on a five-game losing streak. Most of Valpo's conference losses have been to some of the better MVC teams: Drake 83-65; at Belmont 77-68; Bradley 86-61; Southern Illinois 77-68; @ UIC 70-64...One of their non-conference losses was at #23 Illinois 87-64.
This is not a game that we can overlook as Valpo is playing better and we have not been playing well. However, this is also a winnable game if we are focused and ready. If not, then the losing streak will continue. Which team will show up for up?
They are led by 6'2" Jr. Isaiah Stafford: 16.2 ppg, 4.1 rpg, 2.1 apg; and 6'9" Fr. Cooper Schwieger: 10.6 ppg, 5.2 rbg; 6'5" So. Jaxon Edwards (8.6 ppg, 5.9 rpg; 6'1" Fr. Jahari Williamson: 8.3 ppg and 39% from 3; and 6'0" Jr. PG Darius Deaveiro: 7.0 ppg, 5.5 apg.
So, they seem to be a younger guard-oriented team. |

This has to be a win, with or without BHum. It’s a bad day if they don’t.

If any Valpo fans venture over here to check up on the Aces, I would like to correct a post I saw on their board. A poster there said that as a 10 year old in 1966 (me too, so we've both been around a while 🙂), that he saw Valpo beat the Aces, snapping their 25 game winning streak. That was actually conference winning streak. The Aces were 11-1, 12-0 and 12-0 in ICC play the previous 3 seasons, and had beaten Butler in the first ICC game in '66, so conference losses didn't happen too often at that time. Valpo had a good team that year as well and no doubt was amped up against a team they hadn't beaten in a while. But the 35 game overall winning streak the Aces had going into that season was snapped in the first game when Iowa came to town and won. By the time the Aces played at Valpo, SIU was ranked #1 in the College Division. Also, Jerry Sloan was not on the team in 1966. He was a senior in the undefeated season. Larry Humes was still on the team And once again, the Aces did not warm up in their robes. That myth seems to get mentioned a lot. They wore orange warm up jackets,(actually pull overs) on the road, with a big purple outline of Indiana on the back, and a star in the southwest corner where the city is located, and "Evansville" across the top. At home, they wore white warmups with just "Evansville" across the upper back, no map. They took the warmups off in the locker room after warm ups on the floor were done, and the reserves wore the robes on the bench during the game. They were easy to slip out of, which is why Arad McCutchan had them worn in the first place. I actually heard the game referenced on the radio, and saw the rematch the next month when Evansville won. Valpo's Ken Rakow was not only from Evansville, but had attended the same grade school I did, only before my time. He usually got a pretty good ovation when introduced at Roberts Stadium, which was not uncommon back then when players from Evansville (Dave Schellhase, Bob Ford, Larry Weatherford,to name a few) were introduced. We cheered for our guys during the game, but would give then a warm welcome before. Anyway, after 5 straight losses to Valpo, I would like to see UE get back in the win column tomorrow night. I do like Valpo's new coach, who was hired too late to do much this season, but has a chance to turn that program around.

Coach Shellhase was coaching at Moorehead St (In Minnesota- essentially Fargo) when I was at North Dakota so I heard a few stories about him. His playing days were ahead of my time. The best one was - in practice one day, he didn’t think his best player was being aggressive enough so he stopped practice and asked the kid if he ever had 40 in a game before? The kid said Yeah, back in HS once, and Coach said “No, I meant 40 shots!”
Sorry, that’s a sidebar from this topic/post but maybe it made someone laugh

I go back to when Jerry Sloan was a sophomore and they didn't wear the robes to warm up in, they ran out of the Roberts Stadium tunnel wearing them and would lay them on their chairs before warming up for the game.

Tommy said this morning that it was Sensory Awareness Night tonight. There will be less noise and lights during the intro, etc. Should have done this during the Murray State game. The Murray Crazy Cat Lady might not have been so triggered.

Valpo is going to come in here relaxed and confident after their road win in Blo-No while I am afraid we will be puckered up with the pressure of the losing streak growing.
Throw in the fact that less noise and excitement sounds like it could be Todd Lickliter Appreciation Night and this one has me plenty nervous.
