Alumni Spotlight: Kauffman ('07) Swims The English Channel gopurpleaces.com/news/2023/9/6/womens-swimming-diving-alumni-spotlight-kauffman-07-swims-the-english-channel.aspxI believe less than 2,000 people have completed this ocean swim in the last 150 years. The swim itself is a little over 21 miles. The water is cold, sometimes rough and full of jelly fish. This week, former UE swimming and diving assistant coach (and current Associate A.D. for Compliance & Student Services) Kim Smith is in England, supporting former Purple Ace Cari Kauffman ('07) in her attempt to swim the English Channel. Smith is providing daily updates on Cari's attempt, and they will be chronicled here on GoPurpleAces.com and on social media. She should be starting soon….”…We are scheduled to meet at 3:00am (9:00pm CST) with an estimated departure of 5:00am. From there, Cari will be taken to the beach and the swim will begin.”

Looks like she is going to make it. The weather is good and the coastline of France is in sight. Quite an accomplishment. Click below for updates:

Per Kim Smith (current UE Associate A.D. for Compliance & Student Services):
“Everyone! Cari Kauffman has officially conquered the English Channel!”

To put this in perspective: “…Around 300 people take it on every single year, but only around one in five manage to complete it, so the swim is certainly not for the faint-hearted… “ Sourced from: English Channel: The history of swimming the Channel www.bbc.co.uk/newsround/49483420#
