WNIT was not operated by the NCAA, but an independent 64-team tournament. With the NCAA sponsored 32-team WBIT, the WNIT will still continue with a 48 team field.
That is what I gathered from the different press releases I read.

So the WBIT is apparently aimed at putting the WNIT out of business, I assume. Nothing speaks to fair sports like an NCAA money grub now that they learned people will follow the leading programs. Cough up some cash and see who bites. I wonder if they aren't also going to be able to lure foreign teams to this thing. An NCAA "affiliate" status, maybe. In any event, by the time the NCAA carves out its 100 choicest teams, it's not going to draw flies to an NIT.
