We win 7-2 to take the series. We are a game behind Southern Illinois, and a game ahead of Murray State and UIC now. We open up a series with UIC next weekend and Southern Illinois and Murray State play next weekend as well to close out the regular season. So still a chance for us to make it to third in the conference. Does anyone know who owns the tiebreaker between us and Southern Illinois and for that matter, the teams we are just a game ahead of as well that could potentially tie with us? Blunt and Hardman did nice work in this one, which probably resembles Bradley more than they showed the first 2 games.

We have to win two games more than the dogs to take third.

Statistically we could win two out of three, if Murray State sweeps SIU but feel that is probably doubtful. Definitely going to be a Murray State fan next weekend but not 100% how that affects who we play. Probably want in the bracket where we avoid Indiana State till the championship game. Update: Looks like the 3rd and 4th seed in the MVC tournament open against each other. But hard to tell who the winner plays after that. Looks like a double elimination tournament- so likely comes down to a winners and losers bracket after the opening games. mvc-sports.com/feature/23bsb

4th place is probably just as good as 3rd. 5th place is not.
Watching all these teams this spring, the only thing that's constant is that there are far too many unpredictable outcomes. Three weeks ago, we were looking at the Ill.State, Bradley and UIC series as possibly an 7-win cluster, 6 at the very least. So ... 4-2 so far, which isn't terrible.
But a month ago, UIC was dead in the water. It doesn't matter who you beat and they are beating everybody.
It's college baseball with aluminum bats. Best game in town.

Finishing top 4 is the priority and to do so UE must take at least 2 of 3 this weekend at UIC. If not, the Aces would be playing Day 1 in a single elimination game and be 9 innings deep into the rotation, most likely burning Smith in the process.
The Aces would lose the tiebreaker with UIC if they only win 1 head to head and if Murray would sweep this weekend, we would still lose the tiebreaker for 4th as UIC took 2 of 3 from Murray as did the Aces. UIC 4-2, UE 3-3, Murray 2-4 (assuming that's how they'd break a 3 way tie, can't find the tiebreaker easily on the MVC site).
This team is good enough to beat anybody in the league and is very dangerous in any game Nick Smith starts. These tournaments are tough on arms, playing daily and once you lose the path becomes even more difficult, taxing the bullpen even further. As much as I've harped on pitching, the offense needs to be the catalyst if this squad can make some noise and run the MVC Tournament.
It starts this weekend in Chicago, win the series and start with that 3-4 game on Wednesday.

UIC has 7 wins in a row, 3 over Bradley, 1 over Purdue and 3 over the Normal Redbirds. So that's not the premium end of a schedule but a win's a win. I will do a deeper dive into this before Thursday.
This is a Th-F-S series in Chicago, pushing it back a day. So if the UE-Indiana game gets any rain Tuesday, they might cancel that one. IU is a contender for post-season. That would be a nice win.
UIC has already postponed a Tuesday game against Iowa, so it's possible nobody is overly interested in non-con games this close to the MVC tournament.
IF THEY PLAY:
Evansville will send senior LHP Tyler Denu (3-3, 4.30 ERA) to the mound to make his 11th start of the year on Tuesday night. IU is expected to start freshman RHP Ethan Phillips (3-0, 5.11 ERA). Tuesday's game can be heard live in the Tri-State area on 107.1 FM-WJPS and the Old National Bank/Purple Aces Sports Network from Learfield.

A check of ISU's schedule shows a Tuesday "Cancellation" @ Mizzou, so they're likely busy on a Springfield shopping tour of Bass Pro. Anyone privy as to "why" MO would back out of a game w/ an RPI #14 squad? Aren't they near last place in the SEC East?

I think the 2 teams left out are based on full conference standings and not worst record in each division. Right now Mizzou is tied with Georgia at the #12 spot and 2 games in front of Miss St. This may be part of the reason for canceling the game. I see only 6 SEC teams have decided to play a non-conf game tonight.

Just looking at UE's situation, burning a couple of pitchers (or 3) ahead of a series they NOW HAVE TO WIN ... so it's maybe more about that. Indiana State doesn't have to beat Missouri but they probably would. If the weather is iffy, they aren't going to even make the trip. In some cases, if these games were a F-S-S, instead of Thursday, that might factor it in. Although -- today's game at IU is still on, evidently.
