The softball team continues to struggle as the season goes on. Yesterday they got 0 hits and 0 base runners as the UNI pitcher threw a perfect game and struck out ten UE batters. UNI won 8-0. Note: It was a 5 inning game and the UNI pitcher (Samantha Heyers) was just 1-3 last year with a 5.09 ERA in 44 innings. This year she has drastically improved and has a 1.69 ERA in 158 innings. gopurpleaces.com/news/2023/5/5/softball-ue-softball-falls-in-series-opener-at-uni.aspxGame two of the series is today at 2 pm (ESPN3). Tomorrow is the conclusion of the regular season with a game at noon (ESPN+). We are currently 22-29 overall. 8-17 in conference.

It is worth noting that UNI is by far the best MVC softball team with a MVC record of 26-1. They out score us 25-0 in the three game series.
UE loses 9-1 in the regular season finale. We finish the year 22-31 (8-19) after a 13-1 start. Conversely UNI finishes 38-11 (26-1) and winning their last 17 games in a row after going just 12-10 in the non-conference schedule.
As Jim George said: “It’s not how you start that’s important, but how you finish!”
Softball is a program that we need to see some improvement in if we are looking to be competitive in all MVC sports.

I gotta confess to having a rooting interest in women's SB but it's not the program that drives me to drink. They were obviously never a 13-1 team and they probably are also not a 22-31 team either. To win in SB, you need three ace pitchers and those are hard to find. This team was heavily underclass. They may never reach UNI numbers. Clearly nobody else in the Valley is either. Win 45-50 pct of your games, that's not bad.
