Road trip to Kentucky for the Aces who need to take at least 2 from the Horses. Murray scores a lot of runs but gives up a lot of them as well. Nick Smith, the designated Friday ace, will pitch today (2 p.m. and streaming ESPN3 or +, whatever, as well as radio, closed circuit outer space feed and itinerant bombardment of proton molecules from the Battan empire) with -- I assume -- Denu and Schultz in the Sunday DH.
If Roberts, Scherry, Hug and Shallenberger are hitting, we could have a lot of fun.
I assume Jacob Pennington is the Murray starter today. Not that it would matter if the Aces score 9 in the first inning.
Aces 6-6 in the Valley. Murray is 7-5.
Gopurpleaces.com says this series dates back to 1948, which is not quite as far back as I date. UE has a heavy advantage.
Murray's first year in the Valley. Top 8 (of 10) in the conference make the tournament. UE is most likely one of the 8 but this series, and the Indiana State series are pretty important.

Going to be interesting to see how this match up turns out -- we have faced the better teams in the Valley while Murray has pretty much feasted on the cellar dwellers. They did sweep USI while scoring 10+ runs in each game, but the Eagles don't appear to be soaring this year.
We have 3 starters batting .171/.143/.143 in Valley play -- down the stretch it is going to be these guys that can make the difference in turning 4 or 5 losses into wins.
Go Aces!

Go Aces! The Aces have a much more potent offense against righthanded pitching, but of course, the series starter is the team's best pitcher. As is fairly ordinary logic in baseball, getting men on, elevating the pitch count and going first-to-third sets up a lot of big innings. Yeah, that bottom third has to at least produce a couple of base runners in the first few innings. I am stoked about this series.

Good analysis ATP. Who are our best RH hitter options that can come off the bench and give us some help against the LHP?

Of course, today against a righty, we won't see that. Stuart hits right and DH'd early until Shallenberger got back. Murray is getting what they want today -- short innings without base runners. It will be tough to get into their bullpen.

Getting hits from Borgstram and Hord is a bonus ... Rumsey is proving to be a 9 hole hitter, which is unfortunate after his really good start. He got to play when Shally was out. Now ... he's just our No. 9 hitter.

I won't say this is a win yet but the bump in the road is a lot easier with 3 2-out walks and a granny. Need some relief pitching in the 9th.
I had all but given up on this one.

YES! Amazing relief work by Hardman.
Foooooooooooogers with the granny in the 9th.
Pennington pitched a great game for the Horses.
7-6. Take 2 tomorrow and aim high for the Sickos.

Aces down 6-1 entering the eighth, score six runs in the eighth and ninth innings to steal game one 7-6.

No idea how the Sickos are doing this -- 12 wins in a row in the Valley including a big one today over the Egyptian fleas. Here are the standings. It's tight in the middle as you want it to be. Belmont at 5-10 is a bit of a mystery to me since they were dominant against the Aces. Would like to have that series back again. mvc-sports.com/standings.aspx?path=baseball

Kip Fougerousse with two home runs and six RBIs for UE.
Murray State’s bullpen blew a good outing by Murray State’s ace Pennington who gave up one run in 6 and 2/3 innings.

Fouger-- needed to come to life in the bottom third of the order. Hord has been brutal of late, though he did get a nice double today. Rumsey has been in a slump that hurts even me to think about. Getting some guys on for Shall-Hug-Scherry-Roberts -- that just has to happen. Can't have those guys up there with 2 out and 0 on. Base runners matter in college pitching.

A better angle and call on the grand slam and last out of the game:
