Evansville is currently rated 66 out of 305 D1 teams. That is pretty respectable. If we can maintain and hopefully move up some in the RPI rankings that should at least get us in the conversation for an at large bid later in the year. www.ncaa.com/rankings/baseball/d1/rpi

Surprised to see SIU at 108. Valley is a better league than the B1G even though they might not believe that. Still, look at these Southern teams and the heavy loaded home schedules. That is an advantage you can't even "rate" away.

Some parts from the article above that might be of interest:
“…UE has an experienced team with seven upperclassmen starters and 13 more in the reserves. Regular starting senior outfielder Mark Shallenberger has missed most of the season with a broken hand… Carroll hopes to have Shallenberger ready for the April 14-16 series at Southern Illinois but won’t rush his recovery. There are still 31 games remaining before the conference tournament. The Aces’ success has mostly come at the plate. UE scored six or more runs in six of seven games leading into Wednesday. Roberts, Chase Hug and Simon Scherry each have batting averages of over .304. UE has 34 home runs as a team and 39 multi-base hits... The first seven batters in UE’s order Wednesday were upperclassmen... (Eric) Roberts’ 10 home runs, 28 runs, 33 RBI and .422 batting average lead the MVC and he has a 30-game on-base streak that extends to last season. Hug’s .711 slugging percentage is second in the league while his .511 on-base percentage is top… Defensive and pitching success have gone a long way, too.. UE’s 118-inning streak without an infield error was snapped Wednesday in the top of the ninth…the pitching staff has done well in terms of limiting walks, wild pitches and hitting batters... “I think our pitching staff has done an outstanding job of working ahead in counts, getting strikeouts when needed and just the little areas of the game within the game,” Carroll said. “Pitching in general has been able to keep the leadoff hitter of base a lot.”

I've watched as many Aces games on the streaming as were available and do as much on-line feed as I can without appearing to be completely obsessed. There is an intangible that I learned about baseball called "win the inning." The Aces seem capable of that. Even when the other team scores, they knock out a number of their own. Had they used a more experienced pitcher on Wednesday, they'd have beaten SeMO again. Getting down 5-0 in the first is tough when you are already committed to using the second tier of your pitching staff. Wednesday games are spacers for the programs. It beats sitting around from Sunday until Friday. Those are also usually fairly regional games without much travel. The secret now is to win 2 out of 3, seed high in the tournament and win the inning. Carroll is fortunate that Rumsey has been more than adequate in CF with Shally out. If he has a broken hand, it's likely his hitting will suffer even when he's back. There are no actual weaknesses on this team, even though there are places it could improve. Eric Roberts is livin' the dream in the leadoff spot. He was hitting 7th last year.

Aces got two hits to start the first, got a run and had nobody out. They got no more runs the rest of the game. It's odd to see them shut down like that. Valpo pitcher had some skunky numbers but evidently brought a lot of luck with him. Losing 6-1 was the last thing I expected.

Not sure this will affect the ratings, but reliever ERA won't be glittery.
9-8 win ... cheesh 5-run 9th.

Not sure this will affect the ratings, but reliever ERA won't be glittery. 9-8 win ... cheesh 5-run 9th. That’s what tends to happens when you have a guy with a 14.54 ERA trying to close out a game. We will see how the rest of the season goes but looks like someone might have mis-evaluated a grad student who had a career 7.79 ERA before transferring…Hopefully he turns it around and has the worst behind him and pitches more like a 5th year player. As long as we keep winning everyone will be happy.

Then again, these are college pitchers who probably are better at shortstop than on the mound. I think they have to outscore people in this league, and the Aces have been good at that. The lineup has changed a lot since early, and if they get Shally back soon, that adds a bat. Alleging that broken hand doesn't affect his swing.

We definitely need to start closing these games out. I believe Smith our top picture is still out along with Shallenberg.

…I believe Smith our top picture is still out along with Shallenberg. Nick Smith pitched yesterday. He only gave up one run in five innings before the bullpen gave up five in a loss. Looks like he only missed one start as he pitches one time every 6-8 days. I believe Shallenberger is expected back in mid-April if memory serves me correctly.
