More fun than bitching about the Transfer Portal, it's time to return to the roots of sport. The photo below is of the 1923 Evansville College "girls" team. They fly far below sports radar until you consider this: They joined 9 other teams in March 1923 for a basketball tournament at the Central gym. Sponsored by the YWCA and the Evansville Journal, the event was played over 3 nights -- 5 games per session, each of them less than 30 minutes long. Teams included: First Avenue an 11-5 winner over St John's Presby for the title Ev. College, a 10-9 loser to Blue Grass (I assume Henderson KY) Vincennes U, final 4 Wadesville, final 4 First Baptist E-V Independents Hercules Quintet Lockyear's Swan's Down Highland Bethany Zion's The Journal, in its commentary, included this bit, which might be hyperbole and might be accurate. If accurate, a milestone that I suspect the National Association has not promoted extensively.

I think Bluegrass is probably Bluegrass Methodist, which is on Old Petersburg Road and has been around a long time. I used to play basketball at their gym in the 70s and 80s.

There was girls high school basketball in Evansville in the 1920's. In fact I remember reading that Evansville Central won the girls state basketball championship back in the 1920's.
