Prior to the opening of Roberts Stadium in 1956, the Aces played quite a few "home" games at the Owensboro Sportscenter after it was completed in 1949. For the 1950-51 season alone, Evansville played Dayton, Xavier, Butler, Western KY and Tulsa over there. Bus transportation was provided to students for those games. Ron Geary threatened to move the Icemen to the Sportscenter a few years back, maybe if Venuworks keeps screwing with UE, we should threaten the same..lol. Attachments:

I was at that concert but I don't remember any fire. That quote is from the article, not me, so not sure how accurate it is. Maybe it was a really small fire. Cool that you were at that concert.

Geary is such a slimeball. Threatened to closed Ellis Park if he didn't get his way, and the games he played with the Icemen. Every person on the planet besides the fool mayor in Owensboro knew there was no way he was going to put a dime into the Sportscenter, and any renovation would cost a minimum of 10X what he said. Complete bluff and Winnecke cut him off at the knees. Sad thing is the Icemen were a much better product than what we have now, and they did a much better job with promotions, radio, etc. The crowds reflected that. If we are going to lose prime dates to a hockey team, at least put one in here that is properly managed in a real league.

I've been impressed with Winnecke is a good mayor but he was always a good person. We were friends when we were kids and went to Central. He's a couple years younger than me.

Overall, I would agree with you. Certainly better than some of our past ones. I think he handled Geary perfectly, and his standing up to INDOT on the 41/Lloyd interchange stand out as significant accomplishments. I wish he would show the same resolve with them on this half-assed Lloyd plan they have out now. While I appreciate what he did with Geary, I still think Venuworks shouldn't be running the team. It probably cuts down on the risk of losing them, but there is a conflict of interest, which they appear to be abusing in scheduling with UE. I also don't think he handled the ONB implosion all that great, with securing grants, etc for these out of town developers. They seem shaky at best..first, they were going to remodel it, then they suddenly said it was too far gone, but they would replace it with a new development. Drove by there the other day and there is absolutely nothing going on down there. I am starting to fear we are going to be stuck with a vacant lot in the middle of our downtown, at the expense of our skyline, while these clowns take the grants back to Indy.
