We likely have no shot with him, but you don’t know unless you ask. Good to see our name out there

Thomas is in the class of 2024 and could not be contacted until June 1. I like the fact that UE Coaches have already reached out to him. I agree that four stars are hard to get at UE but I like the fact that we have made contact.
We have a coaching staff that wants to make an impact at UE and raise the program to the next level. You will never get there if you don’t knock on the doors. We don’t need to make offers to everyone in the Top 100 but an aggressive approach is what we need. A recruit will let UE know pretty quick if there is any interest in the UE basketball program.

I think this guy has played with John Bol in the past and worked with Marcus’ iBrand Athletics company in the past. Glad to see Marcus isn’t scared to toss his name in with the big schools if he feels he’s got a good relationship with a kid.

I believe these posts are both from when Marcus was running iBrand. Not 100% sure what all he did with him while at iBrand but they definitely have some sort of prior relationship.

If we have a legit shot at a five-star player (John Bol) in 2024, and he likes the coach and the small school environment, we might have a legit shot at him. You never know unless you ask.

And we have two seasons to make an impression on the court.

I love seeing the staff build relationships and make offers to top talent. Although UE probably has a very low chance at signing 4 and 5 stars high schooler on a regular basis, the relationships matter in the transfer portal era even more. When a 4 star has a bad experience at a P5 then that relationship is already there when the player hits the portal and UE could have a better shot at round 2 with the player. Especially with the apparent integrity of the UE coaching staff, guys in the transfer portal have sometimes been burned by shady coaches and could be primarily looking for someone they trust.

The replies in this thread are probably the same comments seen in a Gonzaga board 20 years ago. Now they consistently get top talent. I’m not saying we will get to that level, but you will never know without trying.
You miss 100 percent of the shots you don’t take. I do know that much.

You don't often see top elite recruits sign with non power 5 teams, but it DOES HAPPEN SOMETIMES. You never know what a kid is exactly looking for, and it is not always basketball related...but sometimes it is. Bottom line as stated already you won't get an elite player if you don't offer. All you need is just one to say yes....you simply gauge their interest and go on from there.

Figured I’d say it here since its kinda been touched on. But today Eastern Michigan landed Emoni Bates. He was once considered one of the best sure recruits in a long time. Eastern also threw their school in against major P5s being local and once he hit the portal he landed there. Now, I know his stock tumbled after the year at Memphis, but I’m sure he could have landed somewhere in P5. So I love that this staff has reached out to top talent.

It is always good to make contact. A great player may go to a bigger school, sit the bench or not like the large size classes and huge campus. As we all know, players transfer. So, we plant the seeds when they are 16, 17, 18 and maybe when they are 20 they make a change. You never know until you ask and just because you get turned down initially the seed is planted. Case in point, Blake Sisley and Wright State.
