Aces up 4-0 already in the first as Scherry hits a three-run homer.
Valpo has their strikeout pitcher on the mound (81 strikeouts in 59 innings to go with 43 walks). Shane Gray with an easy top of the first - he did give up a leadoff single but then picked him off and retired the next two batters. A good start. Runners on the corners and only one out and still in the bottom of the first. 27 pitches already for the Valpo pitcher and still in the first.
Update: Aces up 5-0 after one inning. Valpo pitcher throws 37 pitches in the first inning. Shane threw 13 pitches in the first. After 6 innings, the Aces are up 7-0. Gray has a three-hit shutout going with only one walk on 84 pitches so far. 11 hits for the Aces through six innings; Shallenberger, Craig, Scherry and Hug with multi-hit games already (Craig with three hits).
Unfortunately, SIU scored four runs in the seventh to come from behind to beat Illinois State. So, all the more important that we went tonight.

With the win (and DBU loss at Ind St), the Aces have clinched a Top 2 finish in the MVC

And with the loss to Valpo, it is locked as the second seed. But the way they are playing now, they went from bubble team to out in a hurry. What a shame.

ISU nips DBU in Game #2 - must sweep series tomorrow to avoid the play-in game. gosycamores.com/sidearmstats/baseball/media;category=battingBtw, what has happened to NICK SMITH? At DBU, he seemed to be conserving arm strength and his pitches weren't tailing off because of lowered velocity. Tonight he only faced 2 batters?

We had everything falling our way with SIU losing to Illinois State and us at home against the league doormat. Terrible time to lay an egg.
Hopefully we didn't peak a month early.

For the record we were down 3-0 when the game was called. Hopefully we find another gear in the tournament - the same one we were riding the last month or two till this last week.
Evansville will play their first game in the MVC tournament next Wednesday at 3 pm. They play the winner of the 5/8 game (#5 Indiana State and #8 Valparaiso) which is played at 5:30 pm the day before (Tuesday, May 24th).
Note: If you look at the fine print at the bottom left of the bracket, if #8 Valpo wins (they would play SIU) and Evansville would play the 6/7 winner (Missouri State or Illinois State). Basically the #1 seed (SIU) is guaranteed to play the lowest seed that won in their first game.
Go Aces!!!
