Purdue coach Gene Keady said before his team left W. Lafayette for Evansville that their 7-0 record and top-10 national ranking would conspire against them. Evansville coach Dick Walters told the Aces to not let that intimidate them and to have fun. The 11,165 at the Stadium would take care of the rest. Thus, the every-other-year trip Purdue made to Evansville was in line with all the rest of them. The even years, the Aces went to Boilerville and usually got conked in the noggin. The odd years, not so much. In fact, the Aces rarely lost that series at home -- back when real teams were willing to come to the Stadium and sweat it out because, you know ... basketball being a big deal and all. The 80-65 win came about when UE scored a lot of points late, mostly at the free throw line. The win gave the Aces a 5-3 record after they had lost to Lamar in their own holiday tournament. Richie Johnson had 22 points and 13 rebounds in this one. So-so year overall for Walters and the Aces in the Mid-Cities. Purdue ended up winning the Big 10 and as usual choked in the tournament, losing to Memphis, coached by Kenneth Roy and Dana Kirk. Keady won 550 games in a bunch of years with Western Kentucky and Purdue-doo.
