Many moving parts in the months following the end of World War II in August 1945. Many men and women had left peacetime jobs to serve in the various branches of military and slowly they began to trickle back into the mainstream by 1946. In many cases, coaches of college football and basketball teams were also serving as officers in National Guard units, taking only Saturdays off to participate in athletics. For its part, Evansville College was no different. The Purple Aces football team was enjoying its best season ever, going 7-1-2 for Coach Ping. Yo, 9,000 at Reitz Bowl on the final Saturday of the season. (Continued below).............. Basketball was waiting in line and in April 1946, the college dipped into its treasure trove to hire well-known Arad McCutchan to guide the men's team. It was the first of many seasons for Mac, who won 514 games by the time he retired in 1977. Playing at the Armory, the Aces' first win under Mac was a 50-33 win over Indiana Central. Overflow crowd of 2,300. (They had lost 48-43 in their first game at SE Mo.) The Aces won only 6 games in Mac's first season and played a reasonably decent regional schedule. He had replaced Emerson Henke, who had taken over the basketball coaching during the war years. Bill Slyker had been coach prior to that. He resigned to become active in county politics. There have not been very many coaches in Aces history over the century that they have participated in sports.

"The air attack of the Huskies has been invincible all season until Thursday's bowl game."
