Well, no ... but they were not afraid to play them. This one stopped me in my tracks. Today, UCLA wouldn't even take the call. 1961 -- Southern Cal, Colo. State and UCLA were in a four-team field. DePauw, not overmatched, much. They lost the next night to Southern Cal 75-66. Top player was Dick Anderson. UCLA went to the Final 4 in March and lost to eventual champ Cincinnati. Top player was Walt Hazzard. EC actually beat UCLA in this era, but one assumes they'd not regularly accomplish that feat. Aces-DePauw scores from 1961-62: Aces 93-78 at the Stadium (Marv Pruett 31 points) Aces 64-59 at Greencastle (Pruett 24 points). Anecdote in the Courier on 2-15-62. The Missouri Valley Conference was at the time a neck-and-neck with Cincinnati and Bradley and the thinking was, that if the two teams shared the title, they'd have a playoff game at the Stadium. The tie never occurred, the Bearcats went on to win their second NCAA title in a row and we're stuck with Bradley after all these years. Dan Scism said the Valley "bristles with basketball biceps ... the probably the strongest conference in the land." Bradley did play in the NIT but lost out to Duquesne. Dayton won that tournament, cementing western Ohio as THE top college basketball area in the land. Mount St Mary's won the Small College tournament at Evansville over Sacramento State.
