Sad story, and the result is essentially the same. The UTEPs beat the Aces 55-50 in a game that was scheduled so late that the Dayton paper never even covered it. March 20, 1992. The El Pasos went on to knock off Kansas two days later in their bid to try for a 2nd national title. The won the 1966 tournament in a game that has been more legendary than most. They lost out to Cincy in the regional final. The Bearcats then lost to Michigan which lost to Duke -- and we are right back where we started. Parrish Casebier 25.4 ppg was the Purples' season scoring leader. 24-6 overall record and an MCC title for Crews, who was in his 7th season. Nobody is sure if Marty Robbins survived the white puff of smoke. The lovely Felina would know.

One thing about this game - Chaka Chandler and Scott Shreffler didn't play because they were both hurt. But even with that - still a very disappointing game. Evansville led most of it and actually held a near double digit lead in the 2nd half but not having those two guards really hurt. At full strength that team would have been able to give Kansas a run for it's money. I would put that team and the 89 team as the best UE D1 teams for sure. Very, very tough way for that season to end.

I remember watching that game in the bar at the old Sportspark out by the airport. I think we had a softball game prior to it.
That was a nice park and set up, shame it went by the wayside.
