Kareem was still being called Alcindor and frosh were still not eligible to play NCAA College or University division ball in 1968 when the Holland Dutchmen went undefeated. Top Dutchie was a 6-4 guard named Don Buse, one of several Buse people in Indiana, if not Holland. Buse was photographed on May 3 as being a potential starter for the Indiana H.S. All-Stars. A day later, he announced he was going to be a Purple Ace. Monte Stebbins, Steve Creekbaum and Steve Welmer were also added to Mac's roster, joining a few other pretty good players that eventually came together to win the 1971 national title at Roberts. Bob Clayton, Rick Smith, John Wellemeyer, etc ... etc. John Couch was another recruit who isn't as well remembered. Buse went on to have a solid career as a professional. As an aside, I recall being at the Stadium the night the Aces played a holiday tournament game. Met a scout who was here from the 76ers. Gave him a ride to the airport and we discussed players. He said Buse was a natural for the NBA. Pointed out that he had 10 assists that night but only 4 points. "We can teach him to score," the scout said. "We can't teach this stuff."

Good stuff as always atp. I remember well, as a 7th grader, 1968, when the Aces had a great team, and there were several outstanding high school teams in SW Indiana. Holland and Oolitic were undefeated going into the Huntingburg Regional. Buse and Holland won in the afternoon. But part of what made the tournament great for many years (from the fans' perspective) was also what was unfair to so many teams, and that was playing 2 games just hours apart. I remember IHSAA tournament games at Roberts Stadium that were 12:30 and 2:00 in the afternoon, then winners played at 8:15 that night. Often the second game might be closer to 2:45 by the time it started and the winner would be back out there 4 hours or less after their game ended. The night game often times came down to who had the easier game earlier. At any rate, Holland's perfect season ended against Jeffersonville in a game voted years later as one of the best in the history of Huntingburg's gym. Danny Bush was the star player of the Oolitic team that Buse and Holland beat. They would continue their rivalry in college as Bush played for Indiana State. Each team won at home in all 3 of their college seasons, so Buse won the overall series. Dan Bush as he was later called, is probably best known for being Damon Bailey's coach at Bedford- North Lawrence. Rick Coffey was also in the recruiting class with Buse and the "Whale."

Reading back on the Holland-Jeff game, I suppose if I wanted a memory, it would be that the winning team played better, which isn't the same thing as 'we stunk, which is why they won.'

Love reading your posts ATP. You should compile a list of all the defunct high schools in Southern Indiana and their mascot names. Holland Dutchmen is classic. Wasn't Ft. Branch the Twigs or something similar?
Not to get political, but we have lost so much personality and identity over the last 50 years.

Do you remember what Madison’s knick name was? I remember their uniforms. They were red with white and blue polka dots.

I think Madison were the Cubs. Larry Humes' alma mater. Yes, Madison was the Cubs. Great tradition, with a state runner-up in '49, followed by a state championship in '50. They were undefeated going into the state finals in '62 when Larry Humes was a senior. I was just going by schools closer to home earlier. Terre Haute had the Gerstmeyer Black Cats, the Garfield Purple Eagles, the Wiley Red Streaks and the Honey Creek Honey Bees.

I will make a separate thread for this since some won't know to look for it here. This is fun and considering we don't get many games this week............. I don't know where I got this but it's been cluttering my folder for years. Nicknames of the various schools. I know there was a Cynthiana Annas team up the road from someplace. There were township schools in a lot of towns all the way into the middle 60s. Bicknell had a team. There was an interesting school in Decker Chapel, not far from ... Decker. This is a link that takes you through tournament history. Tricky if you aren't careful since some schools, when they ceased to exist, became something else. So if you are looking for Rex Mundi in 1988, you need to know when they closed the place. If you go on the main Harrell site, it has a link to a team's tournament history. Caution: I have found mistakes in this, although not very many. indianahsbasketball.homestead.com/boys.htmlindianahsbasketball.homestead.com/tny/EvansvilleCentral.htm#loadedThis link has all the nicknames, alphabetical. online.fliphtml5.com/bumg/hobg/#p=4If you want football, there is this. The owner of the site says he has it only verified back to 1950, and little by little, will get past that. www.almanacsports.com/football/statechamps.phpThe collegiate stuff. I go to these links to help me with dates. www.sports-reference.com/cbb/schools/evansville/2022.html

Schulte and State also had teams and Glenn was, I think, an orphanage school.
