The Aces were salivating over their chances to win something when the 1963-4 season started, mainly with a lot of experience and depth, and two very solid sophomores -- Larry Humes and Sam Watkins. The first two games of the season were on the road, at New Mexico State, and at Arizona in Tucson. The Aces won both games, establishing themselves as an early favorite in the College Division hunt. In the NMS game, Jerry Sloan had 28 points. In the Arizona win, which might have been considered an upset in other eras, Larry Humes began to show why he was a scoring machine. I clipped this photo from the Tucson paper from Dec. 5, 1963. Humes with his patented soft hook shot. He scored 18 in that game. Briley, Sloan, Zausch, Watkins, Humes in the starting lineup. EC came home to play Iowa three days later -- 11,000-plus saw the Aces lose by 3 points. Evidently that one riled the fans, who thought the officiating stink stank stunk.
