Since UE men can't get a game anywhere in Indy except the Fairgrounds, it's worth noting as the Aces women play the Bullfrogs, this place was a Marvel of Mechanical Magic when it was built in 1928. Plenty of stories surround Butler's conception, where, how, who and why. It's also worth noting that Hinkle was still the coach there when I was preparing to vote for the first time. The original place held 15K and I suspect it wasn't filled for many Butler games, although the state high school events were sellouts. I think the capacity now is just over 9K for basketball. Nov 27, 2010 ... the place was probably pretty quiet (attendance 6,600) toward the end of the overtime. Aces were 19-point dogs to the Dogs. I doubt anyone conceived of the notion that Butler could make the final game two years in a row. UE had lost 7 in a row to Butler before this win. Snagged 'em again at the Ford in 2011, also in OT. 80-77. Losers!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I saw 2 state final games there in the late 60s/early 70s. Also had a walk through football practice on the floor while playing for UE.

Photos from the place in the early days .. man, talk about intimidating for high school kids! Those skylights were scary in their own right. I read where they actually turned the court after a couple of years so that the skylights were on the sidelines instead of behind the goals. During day games, the players were literally sun-blinded. The 90-degree turn also put the fans on the sidelines instead of the end lines. Honestly, I liked a lot of other big fieldhouses better than Butler, although IMO none of them is worse than Assembly Hall in Bloomington.

We used to go up every year during the MCC days. We jokingly referred to it as Roberts North as we could literally outnumber the Butler fans most of the time. Maybe the best game I ever saw in person was there, I think in '91. A Double OT win by the good guys, something like 136-129. I can look up the actual stats later, but what an offensive feast by both teams.
They are our oldest rivals, and the ones we chose to open the Ford against..even pushing IU back to the second game. I realize they think they are high and mighty now, but that game should be played every year.

Butler hit 51 of 62 foul shots. UE had 5 available players in the 2nd overtime with 6 of them having fouled out. Reid and Cochenour each had 4 fouls. Chris Westlake had 15 points in the OT sessions, playing because they didn't have anybody left. UE down by 7 with 1:28 to go in OT before Reid rallied them.

I was also at that game, felt utterly exhausted when it was over just watching it. The one time I met TL, at the Bauerhouse event during the summer after he was hired as an asst under Walter, he brought up that game and we were trying to figure out what year it would have been. Loved watching games at Hinkle, what a special place. It smelled 'old'. Joe Sexson was their coach when I first saw Aces play up there early 80s. They had a short, tireless guard that gave us fits like Shamar...

I had to look up who I was remembering.. it is Darrin Fitzgerald. Was confused on time frame...Played 83-84 thru 87, averaged over 17 pts over his 4 year career for the Bulldogs, and over 26 ppg his senior year. Listed at 5'-9. With those numbers he obviously gave a lot of teams 'Fitz'.

I see several games a year at Hinkle and it is a fantastic place to watch basketball.
Our administration dropped not embracing Basketball as a Marketing tool like Butler, Gonzaga, etc have. It’s hard not to be somewhat bitter tbh given where the two schools were 25 years ago.

We still lead that series even though we did not beat them for a number of years in the early 2000’s. Basketball was always is a great marketing tool for the general enrollment. I believe when I went to UE in the early 70’s that we were the second largest private school in the state. Only Norte Dame bigger. By the way, Roberts Stadium was much nicer than Hinkle for players and fans. Butler has done such a great job of marketing Hinkle and the school

I always thought the Butler games were a nice measure of the team's viability. We knew there'd be a crowd, and there'd be a good headline in the Indy papers, maybe even some Marion County TV/radio buzz before and after. I think that link is badly missing now and even though the programs are in different planes, it was better for UE to play Butler than maybe the other way around.
Still, having in-state games ... I mean, what the ... hell ... Tennessee-Martin?
