Evansville breathed a sigh of relief in 1958 when the Aces fulfilled Mayor Roberts' destiny by finishing 3rd in the NCAAs at the Stadium. The gigantic auditorium wasn't put there to draw crowds of 1,400. So when 1958-59 came around, EC roared through the Regional and came into the event as one of the favored teams. Southwest Missouri State was one of the others. The Aces beat St. Michael's and North Carolina A&T to set up the final game against the Bears, winning 83-67. It was Mac's 13th year as head coach. EC jumped out to a decent lead in the title game and slowed the pace in the 2nd half, forcing SMS to foul, which accounted for the margin of victory. Hugh Ahlering was MVP. An announced paid crowd of more than 8,6 00 saw the title game -- though an estimated 10,000 were on hand. This would have been an incredibly exciting tournament. One of many.
