The story says W-S was unranked despite a 31-1 record and the best scoring player in small-college history. Not sure why that was but I recall seeing these guys play 3 games and I was awed by Monroe's ability. I think the city of Evansville fell in love with Big House Gaines. Valpo, KWC, Long Island, Cheyney, SW Missouri, San Diego St. and Illinois State were also entered. Valpo won the Great Lakes regional 80-77 over Sickamore State. SIU was playing Marquette for what was -- at the time -- a very big deal -- the NIT in MSG. The Salukis had beaten a team from Durham, something something something 72-63. The Slooks beat Marquette 71-56 ... crowd of 18,500. Bevo Francis, whose record Monroe broke, is a fascinating story in his own right. Evansville, in transition, was 8-17 that year but made the Final 8 the next season. In other sports news, U of Illinois was humbled by a slush fund scandal that saw coaches quit, players expelled and alumni running for cover. UE's swimming team finished 12th in the national meet. Earlington and Evansville North won the high school tournaments. Greg Martin of Earlington became a Purple Ace.
