By my estimation we have six seniors (Evan, Noah, Iyen, Shamar, Juaun and possibly Emmette) and only one verbal commitment (Logan McIntire).
Hopefully we start hearing some news on this front soon.

Like I said before, we're like 1 for 5 on signatures

Thanks okie for the information. I think the section entitled “What does an extra year of eligibility mean?” answers it pretty well. Sounds like everyone who was on the roster has an extra year of eligibility-it is as if last year didn’t happen, even if they played in 100% of the games last year. So I guess everyone except Evan and Noah could theoretically come back for another year, if they wanted to and the coaches allowed them to come back. So players like Shamar, Jawaun, Iyen and Emmette could come back another year. (Note: I would think last year would have been a redshirt year for Emmette-so he definitely should have two more years. I think he should be listed as a junior but with the COVID rule it doesn’t really matter if they still let him play two more years.)

Even if we think all our current “seniors”:we’re coming back, it is very shortsighted to not sign clear talent upgrades. In today’s day of Transferring, we should not assume that all players would be back, but even if we knew they WERE coming back, we should be looking to IMPROVE THE TEAM; better bigs, more dynamic wings, etc.
IMHO, we will need BETTER teams to improve our standing in the MVC, not more of the same team. Meanwhile, we should be asking WHY we only have ONE new recruit.

Idk.

Somebody with far more knowledge on this topic than I was able to shed some light and clarity on this topic:
"This year’s returning seniors exercising extra year doesn’t count against 13 scholarships. Beyond that, players have extra year, but it will count against 13. That will impact and complicate a lot of things in roster management for a long time."
So I think this does allow us and other teams to be more picky with our scholarships but it does complicate things a little bit. Hopefully good communication between our players and coaching staff will allow us the flexibility to know who is interested in coming back and who the coaching staff can bring back if we have a full roster.

Yes - this year was a 1-year exception to the 13 total scholarship maximum. From here on out, the 13 maximum limit is back in effect regardless of who the players are on the roster.

We are going to have 6-7 openings this Spring. How do the coaches plan to fill these spots with kids who CAN PLAY?
We have one SG signed from am 800 student HS. That’s it, and we are hearing NOTHING about any other prospects. ZERO. There is no BUZZ.
Meanwhile, Bellarmine has signed a 6-4 SG, Peter Suder from Carmel, a big-school, top IN HS program.
We may not be able to get the Jackson-Davis type kids, but there are enough HS prospects, JUCOS, and transfers of ALL sizes that UE should have scouted and signed. This is a matter of outreach, effort, and priority. From what we can see, there is virtually NO evidence that ANY significant, focused recruiting is taking place. THERE ARE NO EXCUSES. As a coaching staff, this is THE key deliverable to have a shot at a future for UE basketball.

The transfer portal is its own alien creature living inside the walls of the ship. UE will find some players, not unlike Antoine Smith Jr. It isn't the way you build a cohesive roster but it is very Spencer-Lickliter in approach. I think there are a lot of weaker (yeah, weaker) D-1 programs that will survive this way and they will all continue to lose 20-some games every year. Jacobson and DeVries are well past that sort of madness. That is where we are, sadly.
Still, condemning UE because they haven't told us who they are recruiting is just punching the wall.
