I remember going to watch them practice at Roberts Stadium and there at least 5000 people there just to watch them do a walk-thru. Hadn't seen or heard any like that back then and haven't seen anything since. Evansville was a real basketball town back then.

I was at that DePaul game. I remember my dad telling me about how good DePaul was. My dad probably still has the program.

That game was a sellout and televised live on 14, a rare live home game. DePaul was good, but not as good as they thought they were. The Aces should have, or at least could have beat them up there the following year, in 1982. Kenny Perry missed a shot at the end. Ray Meyer gave the Aces no credit for almost taking down #1, instead saying something like Evansville wins if they get lucky on a prayer shot. They were a 1 seed 3 years in a row, 1980,81 and 82, and after a bye, got taken out in their first game all 3 years. He recruited the Chicago playgrounds well, but always lost in the tournament to more disciplined teams.

UE and DePaul played every year for many years. In the late 80's, after little Joey took over, Crews beat them in a close game. Little Joey dropped the series after that. Joey Meyer is the poster boy for nepotism gone bad. That clown couldn't coach dogs to meat.
Another reason to hate DePaul. Originally, DePaul was one of the schools involved in the initial discussions of forming the MCC. They got cold feet, and Loyola jumped in. DePaul became one of the last independents, but refused to join the MCC because they didn't want to put themselves on the same level with Loyola. After Marquette jumped in, they were pretty well left on an island. Instead of joining, they worked tirelessly to create the Great Midwest, solely so they wouldn't have to be in the same conference with Loyola. Had they just joined, the MCC may very well still be together today.

You're correct about the DePaul series. When the Aces finally won in 1988, and I believe Marty Simmons scored the game winning basket, DePaul dropped UE off the schedule. Also back in that era, the Lady Aces played in the North Star conference, which not only included Loyola and DePaul, but also Notre Dame. That would have been something to have the men in the same conference as the Irish. But back then, Notre Dame was an independent and had no plans of changing.

Joey was a putz. He f*ck€d up The CPL pipeline, his father established, through the decades. His thinking (if I recall, when he was fired, in the Sun Times articles) was that he could actually recruit on his own. I think his last season they may have won 5-6 games.

I was a student and was at the game in 1981. At the time, you just showed your student ID at the door and sat wherever you wanted in the student section. For that game, it was a nice day, and we stood in line for a couple of hours before the doors opened an hour before the game. We were in a pretty orderly line, but then instead of opening one door for students as they always did, they opened several doors, and everybody just ran for it. It was complete pandomonium, some people ran aross the court to get to the student section, and the student section was filled instantly. The game was also televised on WGN. I had a big sign that said Milo: (that would be Milo Hamilton) World's Greatest 'Nouncer - spelling out WGN. When I got on camera during a timeout, I flipped the sign over to say Just Kidding. Those were the days.
I also remember Mark Aguire shooting from maybe the third row of seats before the game, and making it. (He didn't get into it with the crowd like Darius Clemmons from Loyola, but it was fun.) The next year we should have beaten DePaul up there. Had the ball down one with a minute to go, held on to it until we got in trouble and took a timeout with 5 seconds left. Kenny Perry took the last shot, as posted by 6571. It wasn't a bad shot, but Ray Meyer said it was "a hope to hell shot." Real gracious, Ray. I've never forgot that.

That's a great story 83ace. I remember the game, but didn't know about the students rushing in like that. Glad you guys had fun with Aguirre. Darius Clemons got the fans riled up big time when Loyola played here. That was a heated rivalry in the 80's.

DALLAS 1984 maybe early '85, was out with friends. We went to this new type concept in night life/sports bar. An adult arcade called, "Dave & Busters". They're sorta outdated now. But, in early-mid 80's, they were quite popular. We were throwing pop-a-shot. My turn came up and I was in that zone. Perfect ball return, excellent muscle memory, flawless form & release.. Pop-a-shot hall of fame type shit. I dropped 25-30 straight, missed and started another streak of 20 plus. Rang the bells, lights flashing..... "NEW HIGH SCORE". I'm swinging out high fives to my mates and others standing around watching my greatest arcade moment ever. I hear a guy behind me say, "gimmmie some of that" I turn to throw a high five and the guy's hand is towering over my head. It was Mark Aguirre. He was with Rolondo Blackman after a Mavericks game.
Long before cell fones & selfies. But, I actually have a photograph of that night. Friend of mine, used to carry one of those disposable cameras with her, all the time. For just those types of moments. That's my Mark Aguirre story.

When Loyola came out for warmups at Roberts Stadium, this was 1981 or 82, Darius Clemons wore a big purple cowboy hat. Of course the crowd went crazy. Yes, that was a heated rivalry!

Thanks for the clarification. I just knew the Aces won on a late bucket. And yes, they didn't play any more after that.
