We should probably create a separate thread for the weekend games being scheduled at the Hulman Graveyard Annex. Before that: At long last, the highly anticipated D-ONE matchup between the Aces and the West End Eagles is scheduled this week. Tuesday, 6 p.m. at Braun, where the dingers will fly. The game will be televised on ESPN+ as well as on New Harmony radio and other expected media outlets. Update: UE is not showing this game to be streaming. ESPN+, however, does show it on the schedule. The Aces played the Screamies last fall in a charity game but they have never met as D-1 rivals for a couple of reasons. The main one is obvious. The other was that they couldn't find any umpires. One of those reasons is a lie. Haven't seen the pitching matchup for it yet, but Kevin Reed, frosh lefty, has usually been getting the midweek starts. Carson Seeman seems like the guy the USI's will lean on for a couple of innings. UE stats from the GPA website. gopurpleaces.com/sports/baseball/stats/2024The Belknap Birds are in the OVC, naturally, and are somewhere near average. 22-26 overall, 11-10 in the conference. They curb-stomped SIU-Edwardsville 3 straight over the weekend after dropping a 7-5 tilt to the Carbondale Mutts last week. For the record, the Screaming Meemies are a whole lot better this year, upgrading in particular their outcomes against teams in their conference. ATP, any idea what Schellenberger's #'s were last week? I thought he'd be in the running for MVC POW... 2 for 4 and a HR against SEMO 1 for 3, HR and 4 RBIs on Friday at Valpo 2 for 5 and a double on Saturday 2 for 5 and a HR on Sunday Related, per GPA: For the first time in his collegiate career, University of Evansville senior pitcher Shane Harris captured Missouri Valley Conference Pitcher of the Week honors on Monday, after helping UE post its first shutout of the 2024 season on Sunday in a 9-0 victory at Valparaiso. Harris anchored UE's first shutout since last May on Sunday by tossing a career-high 7.0 innings on the mound, allowing just three hits and a walk while striking out a career-best eight men. Of the 21 outs that Harris recorded, 18 of them were either on the infield or via the strikeout, and after allowing a lead-off double to begin the game, Harris retired 14 of the next 15 Valparaiso hitters in order. He allowed just two base-runners to advance past second base on the afternoon.

That's smok'n...
Has Harris ever pitched two (2) good games back to back THIS season?
I note where BOTH Harris & Nick Smith initially played Summer Collegiate Ball in Amsterdam, NY in '21, but neither participated ANYWHERE after. Reason(s) why? Both were highly successful in the picturesque Amsterdam. Doesn't add up...

Harris:
Smith: I don't follow the summer programs beyond the general, mainly because the players are just clustered together. They live in guest housing when they can find it and there's no budget for anything. I don't even know who pays their way. There were a few Aces who played in summer leagues and a couple of them were there a week, a couple of games, not all season. Shallenberger started out in the Cape Cod and was gone from there after a week, playing first base. Ended up in the Northwoods League. Hug and Hord were in that league too. I think some of them just sign on for a couple of weeks just to get out of town. I do know that most of the summer league pitchers are frosh or sophs who are trying to ramp up their game for the college competition that is better than they faced in high school.

10-0 mercy killing. Aces with 3 dingers in the first. I'd need to see the Screamies weekend pitching staff to see how they'd fare but their Tuesday offerings not so hot. USI has a nice leftie who got a few K's. Box lunch stats.statbroadcast.com/broadcast/?id=502736

Good ego boost as the Aces prepare for the battle for #1 in the MVC this Friday. Nothing better than facing "live arms" v. "mechanical." Also maintains defensive fluidity, where ISU has been mothballed all week and will initially see a few cobwebs. This is the #1 baseball rivalry in the MVC...can't wait for Friday 4:30 est ESPNU.
***I note where Smitty got in for the 7th inning "mop-up" action, throwing 23 pitches. Wish I had video's of his delivery motion 2nd season v. now. You simply can't fall off the college BA globe like he has w/o cause.

He had Thoracic outlet syndrome. The surgery is one that has come up more recently than in years past. The most prominent pitcher to have that done was Matt Harvey, who was once considered the Black Knight of a powerhouse Mets rotation with Wheeler, DeGrom, Syndergaard and Matz. All of them have had arm/shoulder problems --- Wheeler is still dealing. Matz is pitching, DeGrom on the IL. All their injuries are different but it's still about the human frame. I think the Aces as a team are boosting Nick as much as they can. He had a minute in that 7th when the coach came out and the players all gathered on the mound -- it seemed like a pretty special moment for them to get this guy through that inning.

He (Nick Smith) had Thoracic outlet syndrome… I just caught a few seconds/couple of minutes of the seventh inning when Nick was was pitching but heard the announcers mention some type of “syndrome” surgery that he was recovering from. It was mentioned right when he got the first batter out. Thanks for posting the official surgery/syndrome. A quick Google showed there were 26 MLB pitchers affected by this and “21 players (81%) had a successful RTP.” Note: RTP = Return to play. The recovery is generally 12 weeks but the recovery period varies. Some in as little as 4-6 weeks and some in 4-6 months. So there sounds like there is hope for him to recover; but there are only weeks left in the season. Good to see him come in and retire the side in the seventh, even if it took 23 pitches. The only batter to reach was on a walk.

I was only able to go watch the first 2 innings (the best ones) of the game last night, but informed Pom Pom Mom that her dog has a new name...Brutus. She got a kick out of that and thought it was an appropriate nickname for him.
I was told concession stand lines ran about 45 minutes last night, so hopefully that gets improved for the MVC tourney.

I had the chance to get up-close-and-personal with Angus at Sunday's game. He sat with me in the grass and gnawed on Valpo leather.

Would Smith have reason to apply to the NCAA for a "Medical Waiver?" Good question. Not sure if he is eligible though as he has appeared in 14 games with seven starts and 31.1 innings pitched already. So doubt that he would be eligible. gopurpleaces.com/sports/baseball/stats/2024/pdf

“…There are two requirements for players to be eligible for a medical redshirt. The injury must have occurred in the first half of the season and the player must have competed in less than 30% of the competition...” teamfactsrecruiting.com/college-baseball-redshirts-and-eligibility-timelines/Simple math says he might be eligible with 55 regular season games suggesting that he has to play in less than 16 games to be eligible.

Smith really has no reason to continue with his college education. If he can pitch, he's as well off trying to get an audition with the Otters. If he can't pitch, why spend another 2 semesters chasing another "degree" in something?
