Fernando is well known and respected on the international stage. This is a good opportunity for him. Fortunately, he will be coaching at UE in the fall in what hopes to be a very good season for the Aces. And while I would love to see Fernando stay for a long time at UE, I hope Ziggy has a plan in place in case he does not.

I believe he will be here as long as he can continue coaching internationally and at UE.

You are correct on Fernando. Last summer was a little bit different (maybe not the best word choice) in the sense that it was an Olympic qualifying year. Never too early to be talking about fall volleyball season! I am hopeful and optimistic on a great season from the Aces!

The issue is he will be with the South Korean national team for the summer Olympics. This will essentially take him away from the Aces program for the whole summer and will force all preseason court work, skill development, rotation and lineup tweaking, etc. to fall onto the assistant coaches. I am happy for Fernando, but his international vb responsibilities have put a strain on the Aces program the past couple of years. I may be wrong, but I believe it's a reason why they have struggled.

South Korea has not qualified for the Olympics. Last year was certainly a busy summer with PR trying to qualify for the Olympics. UE is also hampered a bit as not all athletes can return as early as they would like with restrictions on student visas. Furthermore, UE does not cover housing and food for volleyball players in the summer when they do return. Certainly Fernando does miss time due to international coaching duties....having said that, those duties have certainly have been able to enhance our profile as a program and university, and Fernando has certainly been able to bring in many recruits that would not have considered UE otherwise. Having Fernando and Alondra play on big stages is a huge positive and net win for the volleyball program.
