“Evansville, All Hail To Thee, True and Loyal We Will Be, We Will Fight, Fight, Fight With All Our Might, Cheering With Pep And Vim For White And Purple! And With Every Victory, Our Hearts With Praise Will Fill. And We'll Back You With A Rah! Rah! Rah! All Hail To Our Evansville!” White and Purple, right, it’s there in the fight song. It’s well-documented that Coach McCutchan’s Aces wore orange jerseys and Coach Crews brought them back to honor McCutchan in the early to mid-90’s. Orange seems to have been in the color scheme and main color of alternate jerseys since then. When I first really remember going to Aces games, around 1986-87, these teams wore white and purple with yellow/gold trim. Watching the Purdue game from the 1983-84 season on YouTube (thanks RiverCity Ace), you can see yellow/gold trim on the Aces’ home whites. Is this something Dick Walters had added or suggested, or was it from someone else in the athletic department? Also, the baseball team wore white and navy pinstripes at Bosse Field under Jim Brownlee. Can anyone recall other colors worn by any Aces athletic programs besides white and purple? 1983-84 Purdue at UE youtu.be/X7lBwNLjJcQAndy Benes Topps Rookie Card in Aces Uniform www.comc.com/Cards/Baseball/1989/Topps/437/Andy_Benes/1952362

You are correct - They wore yellow until 1996 I think. If you watch the Crews games on River City Ace's channel you will see the yellow trimmed jerseys. Personally, I always thought those looked better than the orange (I am not a fan of the orange at all and honestly never will be). In the 80s they even had Yellow jackets they wore for Warmups. You can see them in the Murray State game in 89 and the two NCAA games in 89 on that channel. I just think yellow and purple go together much better than orange and purple, but that's just my opinion. I'm sure others see it differently.

I graduated in 1983. The Aces wore white and purple when I was in school, and maybe because of that I have never been a big fan of the orange. I have to say that I had forgotten that there was some gold trim on the uniforms in that era, but the video doesn't lie and that small amount of gold trim looks good. I agree that purple and orange is not a great combination.

If I remember McCutchan had the orange uniforms because they were easier to see on the court. I hope someone can add to this.

Sorry Commander Servo. Even after you've taken the contest to new and better heights than I. And, I agree with 96.73% of your comments. I'm all about The Orange.

If I remember McCutchan had the orange uniforms because they were easier to see on the court. I hope someone can add to this. Yes, just remembering what I’d read in past game programs and newspaper articles, McCutchan had the Aces wear orange on the road because they were easier to see on the court in a hostile environment. The sleeved jerseys were made part of the uniform because players wore sleeves in practice because the gym was cold, I’m guessing this was at the Armory. The Aces went to the more common sleeveless jerseys when they went Division I. Coach Jim Crews brought the sleeves back in his first or second season as a tribute to McCutchan. I recall a Crews quote in the programs at the time that said something like the Aces would wear sleeves as long as he was the Evansville head coach. The orange jerseys were brought back by Crews in 1993-94 I believe, again as a tribute to McCutchan, and were worn for all home games that season. This meant some, maybe most road teams wore white at Roberts Stadium. In the link below, again from River City Ace, the Aces wore orange against Xavier who wore white. This was a transition time from yellow to orange as a secondary color as the space on the court between the free throw lanes and inside the three point lanes was solid yellow. Sometime after 93-94, possibly as early as 1994-95, the court was changed to a parquet pattern. youtu.be/41p28dkuZ7gAdding to unique things done by McCutchan, I recall he had the Aces wear different colored boxing robes on the bench at home as a way to intimidate the visiting teams. Would love to hear someone add to this and maybe other unique things done by Coach McCutchan.

The boxing robes were awesome. The practical thought behind it was that you could get a robe off and get into the game faster than with a traditional warmup. I think they took some heckling on the road for the robes, but that was even more unique than the sleeves. I would love to see the robes again - imagine a big game at home, and we show up with this crazy kaleidoscope of boxing robes. Well, that’s probably a little far-fetched. (We would have to start winning to really have s big game.)

Just caught up to this. Sleeves: The ones they wore in the 60s were form-fitting. The ones McCarty brought back for one game were oversized snd looked like tents on some of the players. I recall Feehan struggling to keep his shoulders in place. That was a uniform FAIL.
I am a big fan of the sleeves, however, if they are done properly. I thought the robes were amusing but hardly functional as they try to convince me. The players kicked them under the chairs mostly.
I like the orange but the purple is classy, though I like the Aces script on it, not the block EVANSVILLE.
