I don’t want to see there is a new post in general recruiting, and then find out the post has zero to do with general recruiting. It’s a waste of my time. That’s why there are certain areas for certain posts. Keep preaching! I have been roundly chastised for being Captain Obvious.

My bad, I was the one that made the remark about Austin Croshere and the Pacers.
To bring it back to general recruiting -- I spoke to Sammy Dowd after the game tonight and wanted to let him know we are all still behind the Aces and the coaching staff. When I inquired about the mindset of the coaches (and how they were handling this difficult year) he told me they all pretty much knew this would be a tough year and are doing ok. He was very high on our new recruits and hinted that he feels we will be much improved next year.
If you have never spoken to Sammy, I would highly suggest finding him after the game and chatting. He has a great attitude and is very appreciative of the fans that are sticking around this year.

I'm assuming we are done with recruiting until after the season is over. Then we will see if we have any defections.

I’m sure our assistant coaches are making recruiting contacts as the ncaa rules allow. To stop the process would be a major error.
The college recruiting game has changed forever with the portal. So much so that it’s even being discussed by broadcast announcers during games on tv as a way to improve your team or replace team members who are considering moving on.

So much so that it’s even being discussed by broadcast announcers during games on tv as a way to improve your team or replace team members who are considering moving on. I notice this as well. Usually those are the elephant-in-the-room topics that broadcasters are asked to steer clear of ... not unlike academic eligibility. As one who believes that the portal will eventually shove the mid-majors into a D-1A division, I honestly believe schools are going to be forced to ask players to sign term contracts -- which inevitably leads to agents. Agents are not a good thing for kids who are just out of high school. But recruiting a whole new team every other year is the same thing as we saw for years in Juco ball. What will happen, if the best occurs, is that the Painters and Woodsons of the world send a player or two down to UE for "seasoning". Rules? Kansas didn't even bat an eye when they were guilty of every sin imaginable.

The word on the street is that the P5 have stopped recruiting high school players. Their plan is to poach the players that they want off other teams. This is a "+" for us. We might be able to get a player (or two) that fall through the cracks.

Just saw this thread and thought it was worth sharing. There’s one thing all these mid major impact players have in common: they transferred down a level for my playing time and are thriving.
As others have mentioned in our various recruiting/state of the program discussions, if there’s one silver lining to our current situation it’s that we can offer plenty of immediate playing time to the right impact players. If we can get 2-3 of the right former P5 guys to transfer in, our outlook on the 23-34 season and the state of the program could change very quickly. Based on recruiting success so far, I have no reason to not believe that the staff can get some of these guys to transfer in.

This is still a matter of being one of the best of the second tier of teams that have to hang around to be raw meat as a 15 seed. Winning the Valley is a goal, and a nice objective. What else do we win?

What else do we win? I really don't need more than that. Winning the Valley means you've won 20+ games and most of your home games. Sounds good to me. The Budweiser/Joe Lunardi Tournament in March will always be won by one of the 20 teams who have won the last 40. It is designed that way, otherwise the tournament would be arranged by a blind draw. Instead, it is "seeded" in a back room by kings atop Clydesdales who plant 64 seeds but only water 16 of them. So, YES! Let's win the Valley!

Eventually there will be a tournament that's worth winning.

Eventually there will be a tournament that's worth winning. Winning a tournament doesn’t matter, besides the Arch Madness tournament. Proving you belong with the big guys and getting national exposure for your program is all that matters in March. Making it to the sweet 16 will get you just as much exposure and brand recognition as winning an NIT would, and it’ll get you 100x more than any of the C tournaments will. If you’re one of the few mid majors lucky enough to make an elite 8 or final 4, that might as well be a championship in and off itself. Everyone who seriously follows college basketball over the last 20 years knows the names George Mason, Wichita State, Loyola, and St Peter’s. Would it be nice to have a remake of the “college division” tournament for mid majors to have a chance at winning? I guess so, but no one besides mid major fans will give a damn about it. I’d rather try to prove we belong in a tournament that’s stacked against us than hoist a championship trophy in a tournament that no one cares about, personally.

With Brock Vice officially signing at Creighton, outside of Bailey it appears we have lost out on several good prospects that we offered. Not that I am down on the recruits we currently have, but I believe it is going to take Ragland and crew having a respectable year (in terms of wins) that will tip the scales in our favor for some of the more highly rated players. As KentuckyAce posted on the Brock Vice thread, it is good we are casting a wide net and going after some top prospects, even though (as some have commented) there is not a great chance of landing one of these guys. Not too many guys wanting to join a program that has only 20 wins for the last 3 1/2 yrs (post WM era.) But with 1-2 decent years, bigger crowds at the Ford (actual butts in the seats) and being a contender in the middle to top half of the Valley, these players will give us a better look.
Let me coin the phrase, "We are too small to fail." i.e. as a small D1 school without football, we cannot suck at basketball.
