Are there date windows when freshmen and transfers are allowed commit to a team? Can they sign LOIs during the summer?

I could be wrong, but I think the LOIs for incoming freshman have to be singed by May 18th or somewhere around there. Transfers can commit anytime prior to enrollment deadline for classes in the fall I think? If I recall correctly, we got Sam Cunliffe to commit around the second week of August in 2018?

As Larry mentioned, transfers would have to commit and enroll for class before the deadline to be eligible. Last year, 8/25 was the first day of classes: Academic Calendar 2021-2022 Important DatesClasses begin 8/24 this year: Academic Calendar Fall 2021-Spring 2027

Jeff Goodman has been campaigning for this guy to get released from his NLI by SC State. I think we can all agree holding the NLI over his head in this situation is terrible.
What’s interesting to me is that I’ve seen the low major madness guy that I have posted here a few times respond to his campaign for this player about how NLIs are terrible deals that screw over student athletes and he doesn’t understand why anyone would sign one in this day. I was always under the impression that an NLI is required to be a collegiate athlete, but the low madness guy claims that the only thing required is the financial aid agreement between the player and the school. If the NLI isn’t actually required, does that mean you can sign players past that date? I’d be interested in learning more about the dynamics of NLIs between players & schools if anyone else is knowledgeable on the subject. From the NLI I read, they seem to be a very one sided agreement that really screw over the student athletes imo.

Spinelli is a HS senior and just committed. I guess the May 18 date is completely meaningless

An NLI is more binding where a verbal commitment is just that where you can back out more easily and there is nothing binding other than your word.

An NLI is more binding where a verbal commitment is just that where you can back out more easily and there is nothing binding other than your word. The NLI in a sense protects both player and school- each are committed. Without one a player could change his mind and go somewhere else and the school could recruit someone else who comes along and then tell the player sorry, we are out of scholarships. Signing the NLI, especially in the early signing period, means a player won’t be hounded by recruiters for the next several months. We have had a number of players who commit after the NLI deadline. The NLI may not have applied anyway since he was an international player, but Egidius comes to mind as one.
