The game against Central College of Iowa was held at Reitz Bowl in the pouring rain with 5,000 cold wet butts in the stands. UE scored on a 51 yd TD pass with 1:32 left in the game to make the game 17-16. The tying extra point was blocked. Central College went on to beat Ithaca College the next week 10-8 to win the Div III national championship. You guys had a great team that season. There was lots of speed, that as you mentioned many moons ago, was slowed down by the mud in Reitz Bowl. Lady luck was not on the Aces side that day. Five fumbles, five lost. A blocked punt and then the blocked extra point at the end of the game. Hats off to Central College. They went 11-0 that season and outscored their opponents 255-86 including 5 shut outs.

What year did Evansville go D2 in football? I always thought they were D2 in football because they were when I was there in the 80’s. I guess they were D3 through the 70’s? That ‘74 team must have been pretty good and one of the all-time best in the history of Evansville football. Not sure I have seen that many W’s in one season for a UE football team. The information I have is that UE went D2 in 1977. After further research I find a article in 1977 that UE football was hoping to make the D3 tournament and in 1979 article on UE vs Georgetown-KY states that Georgetown is a NAIA D2 member and UE is a NCAA D2 member. So UE moved up to D2 in 1978 or 1979. I am trying to find out what year UE moved up.

This link of UE season records and games seems to says that UE moved to the Heartland conference in 1977 - I’m guessing that move would have been when they moved to D2 as they stayed in that conference till ‘86/‘87. college-football-results.com/f/evansvll.htm

I had not seen it before. To answer the D2 question, the best I could find is football was DIII until the Pioneer Football League in 1991. The PFL was created since the NCAA set a 1993 deadline for all universities playing DI basketball needed to move all sports to DI.

UE moved up to D2 in 1978 or 1979 then moved back down to D3 in 1989 and then moved to D1-AA in 1993. Also the youtube channel D1360 did a update on the Indiana Collegiate Conference.

Also the last year for the Indiana Collegiate Conference was the 1977-78 season and the Heartland Collegiate Conference was formed in the 1978-79 season

I believe the more posted about the UE football program the better. After you post the 1977 season, I have some information to post concerning the post war years until 1977, more particularly the Indiana Collegiate Conference years.

Thanks to Harrison88 for all his hard work compiling and posting the entire record of UE competition.
With that being said I would like to add to this thread and discuss the ICC (Indiana Collegiate Conference) years. UE was a charter member of the conference and competed in football from 1952 to 1977. During those 25 seasons, UE had 15 season with a winning conference record of .500(4) or better(11). The 1970s were the most successful decade with the team being .500(1) and better(6) with the 1977 season being the only losing season of the 8 seasons competed. From 1970 thru 1976 UE went 24-9 in the conference. Throw in the 1969 season of 3-1 and the Aces had 8 consecutive winning seasons in the ICC. All 8 of these season were under head coach Jim Byers.

Thank you, If I had to do it over again I would have put the dates on the games and location sites on the games. I hope someone can start a wikipedia page for the UE football team with this information. I do not know how to start a wikpedia page or I would have done it myself.

In my research in the Evansville Press October 8, 1978 paper on page 21 in the Depauw-Evansville article it states that Depauw is a D3 school and Evansville is a D2 school so it looks like UE moved to D2 football in 1978.
