A 20-7 record in the face of a 1-point loss in the conference tournament, the Aces of 1988 were off to the NIT -- at home against Utah. The Mule and his pals womped up on UU 66-55 and were all set for Boston College five days later. Never mind that. Boston College blows chunks, OK? They just do. Go toot your Flutie. The 1988 team had Simmons, Godfread, Haffner, Bomba. It was also the prelude to the 1989 team, which was UE's finest moment in D-1. The 1987 team, with a worse record but a similar team, was also considered a contender for an NIT spot at 16-11 before a peculiar schedule that saw them need to beat Marquette four days AFTER they had lost to St. Louis in the MCC conference tournament (won by Xavier and Byron Larkin). Evansville's 55-51 loss to St. Louis had been truly unexpected. The Marquette loss at Milwaukee was 74-63.
