Our lady Aces softball team got pounded today in both games against UNI, who is the first-place team in the MVC softball conference standings. Lost 8-2 and 10-0 with our ace pitcher getting pounded in the first game. They play again at noon tomorrow. Link to the schedule. We are still 17-10 overall and 2-3 in the conference.

Lady Aces lose to a bad Bellarmine team 9-5. Looks like they went with a freshman pitcher instead of their Ace (Vetter) or their second-best pitcher (Weatherford), not sure why. Note: Weatherford did pitch the last two innings but they had already given up seven runs before she entered the game. Hopefully they do better in league play against Illinois State this weekend as they play three games on Saturday and Sunday - conference play is always tough. Maybe they were saving Vetters (and Weatherford) for this weekend's conference games.

Softball team now on a five-game losing streak (four of those in conference play) as they lose all three games to Illinois State this weekend on the road. Two losses (with their ace Vetter starting) they lose 2-3. The middle game they lost 9-0. Seems like there is a big drop off when Vetter doesn't pitch. The MVC does appear to be tough as Vetter who through a couple of no-hitters in non-conference play is competitive in league play but the opposing teams seem to have someone just as good or better on their side. Aces are now 20-15 overall and 5-7 in league play.

The softball team has now lost seven straight - six of those games in conference. They are now 20-17 after starting the season 20-10 and 5-9 in conference play. They lost both games of the double header yesterday to Missouri State 2-8 and 1-4. Missouri State's ace (pitcher Steffany Dickerson) was simply better than our ace (pitchers of Vetter and Weatherford). In fact, Dickerson was so good for MSU that she basically beat us in both games. She only threw 67 pitches in six innings for the win in the first game and threw 55 pitches in four relief innings for the win in the second game. For reference, Vetter threw 107 pitches in six innings in the first game for us and Weatherford 94 pitches in seven innings in the second game. One bright spot for UE was that Marah Wood was 3-5 for the day with a solo home run and a walk. Hannah Hood was also 3-5 for the Aces for the day. Zoe Frossard was 2-4 for the day. The lady Aces play again today at noon. It is a home game at Cooper Stadium, but the game is also on ESPN3. Current MVC softball standingsNote: One thing when we get a new AD in place that I will be looking at on an individual team sport level for our 17 sports teams is each one competitive in conference play. We obviously play in a very tough mid-major conference; however, IMHO we should be competitive in conference play which for me means .500 or better in most or every year. That should be the minimum acceptable bar to me and obviously we want to compete for MVC championships on a regular basis is the preferred expectations/results. Right now, we are not competitive in most sports in conference play.

The lady Aces lost their eight straight game (seven of those in conference play). Steffany Dickerson for MSU got all three wins in the three games that were played in about 24 hours. She went six innings today (92 more pitches) and gave up one run. Not sure if it makes us feel better but she has been the MVC pitcher of the week three times already and conference play is just starting. MISSOURI STATE’S DICKERSON EARNS THIRD MVC PITCHER OF THE WEEK AWARDShort MSU Facebook post of her mindset on the moundSeems like we need an elite pitcher like this to take us to the next level. Vetter is good and was dominant against the non-conference mid-major teams but she has got hammered pretty good against the elite non-conference teams and the good MVC teams. She also is a senior. Hopefully they got a good pitcher or two coming in next year. Weatherford is a freshman - she seems to be our second best pitcher (but she doesn't seem to be a dominant strikeout pitcher but shows promise as a freshman).

Two things a pitcher needs to be dominant. Movement, and more movement. I’ve seen girls throw with all kind of speed get hammered because the ball just doesn’t move. A rise ball is extremely ineffective if it only goes up two inches. A drop ball needs to be dug out of the dirt to be effective. Right now, I’m not seeing a lot of movement from the ladies pitching for UE. Don’t get me wrong, speed can be effective against lesser talent. But just watch one of the top pitchers in the country, and their ball moves all over the place as well as being fast. Remember, these ladies are getting this movement in only 43’.

The Lady Aces seem like they are totally overpowered in the MVC. They lose their 10th game in their last eleven games. Today they lose the first game of a double header to Bradley 10-1. Our ace pitcher (Vetter) again gets blasted. In four innings she gives up 10 runs on 11 hits and four walks. While our offense only gets three hits and no walks - luckily they all came in the same inning (the fourth) to allow us to get a run on the board. A team that was once 20-10 is now 21-20 overall and 6-12 in conference play. We are currently ninth in the MVC standings. They play again shortly at 2 pm and again tomorrow at noon.

The Lady Aces softball team win the second game of the double header with Bradley. This actually is their second win in their last three games (even though wins have been few and far between the last month). Freshman Sydney Weatherford has done a solid job as the number two pitcher for the Aces this year and is 7-6 on the year. The Aces got outhit 9-6 and had four errors; however, a big first and fourth innings with the help of some wildness from the Bradley pitching staff (five walks and three hit batters) fuel the Aces to the win.

Softball team making a bit of a resurgence this weekend as they have now won three of their last four games with freshman Sydney Weatherford looking good enough to go the distance in back-to-back games this weekend totaling 185 pitches in about a 24 hour span.

The Lady softball team was not as fortune this weekend as they got swept by SIU. They are now in ninth place and close out the regular season next weekend on the road with a three-game series with last place Valparaiso. MVC Softball standingsThe Aces were solid in non-conference and battle, but it looks like they need a couple of more solid players to compete in the Valley, especially an Ace pitcher.

Probably two pitchers. An ace and solid second starter.

A team that started the season 20-10 but has gone 4-16 in their last 20 games, enters the single elimination MVC tournament tomorrow as the ninth seed against #8 Loyola. The winner plays #5 Bradley on Thursday. The loser goes home. 2022 MVC Softball Championship Field SetThe game is on ESPN+ at 11 am. For stats and links to watch the game visit the UE Softball schedule page. Note: UE did take two of three from both Loyola and Bradley this year. UNI with a 22-2 conference record is the favorite to win the postseason tournament. Evansville gave UNI one of their losses. So, there is always hope for a miracle run here. Vetter threw 176 pitches in that UNI win.

Sounds like they fought hard but couldn't get any runners across the plate. Always next year but at least they were near .500 due to a stellar non-conference record.
