Well....what if he becomes all MVC and a school like IU or Purdue comes calling with $200K NIL to give him? Do you think his "loyalty" to UE will keep him from moving on? Did Butler fans think his "loyalty" to their program would keep him there too?
Until the NCAA caps NIL or UE can raise enough money through collectives (or until local companies see UE basketball as enough of a marketing tool to allocate money to it), then this will be an annual keep your fingers crossed time of year for us....and most schools.

If he’s as good as we think, we won’t keep him for 3 years, but we might be lucky enough to have him for two and have him transfer back up after a 1st team all MVC season in year two. He seems to have a very strong relationship with Rags so I think his loyalty will be better than some others. Hopefully this isn’t a one year rental, but if it is, let’s finish out with another strong portal piece to compete for a title next year. Larry here thinks people are only motivated by dollar signs. Some people Larry see the big picture where relationships and loyalty matter. You know, a thing called priorities. That only goes so far. You’re lying to yourself if loyalty would keep you making $50,000 or less when you had the opportunity to make $250k or more. I love my boss and my company, but if you told me I only have two years two work for them and then I have to change professions, and someone else in my current profession was willing to double or triple my salary for those last two years, I think most of us on here would be doubling or tripling our salaries. Thats life changing money for a 20 year old kid. You could put a fat downpayment on a house and put the rest in a retirement account and it would compound so much you’d barely have to save the rest of your life and could end up in the same place most of your college peers will at retirement. I doubt most of these kids are being financially responsible like that, but an extra $200k at 20 years old still opens a lot of doors that most people st that age don’t have. You can keep responding like this every time the topic comes up, but you living in denial isn’t going to change the fact that we’re likely not going to be able to hold onto guys anymore after a first team all MVC caliber season.

I think loyalty will play a part, but money speaks pretty loudly. There's no doubt in my mind that players will chase money even when they're happy in their current situation. And many will chase the money over and over again. College sports is changing permanently.

Along with “Don’t be an idiot,” Dwight Schrute’s take on Loyalty is one of the wisest things he ever said:
“Would I ever leave this company? Look, I’m all about loyalty. In fact, I feel like part of what I’m being paid for here is my loyalty. But if there were somewhere else that valued loyalty more highly … I’m going wherever they value loyalty the most.”

And many will chase the money over and over again. College sports is changing permanently. Exactly. I feel like loyalty and relationships has already played a big part in getting him here. Maybe we’ve figured out our NIL situation with private boosters and made him a decent offer, but idk for sure on that. I do know SLU and Drake were recruiting him and have very well organized collectives with money available. Pure speculation, but I think there’s a chance he’s already left money on the table to come play for Rags becsause of his strong relationship with him. There’s a big difference between leaving 10-20k on the table and 200-300k though. Loyalty and personal relationships can’t make up a 6 figure difference, and it’s naive to think it ever will.

I think there is some middle ground in this debate. On the surface, Larry is probably right we will struggle against a true P5, dollar for dollar, but he does seem to have a defeatist attitude in this regard. We can't just shrug our shoulders on this. If so, just call it now and head to D-3.
We may not be able to go toe to toe financially with a Kentucky or Indiana, we have to be able to with our peers. We just won one with SLU. Who knows all the reasoning, but some of you think they have an endless amount of cash. There apparently wasn't enough of a NIL difference to swing him. Maybe they spent all of Doc's money on Shitz and Goggles. Who knows, but loyalty and relationship played a hand. Rags can continue to win close battles with that. He may be one of the most likeable coaches out there. This community has poured a lot of resources into this program over the years, and I have to think we should have no problem running with anyone at our level.

Awesome pick up and great work by Rags and the staff to add Connor to the mix. With Connor and Josh, rim protection is going to be better than we have seen (possibly ever).
Welcome aboard.

This young man hasn’t even grabbed a rebound or scored a bucket for this program yet, and we’re stuck on how long he’ll be here. I get that’s our new norm as a mid major, but man I say let’s focus on now and be excited and thankful he chose us over programs like Drake and SLU and who knows else. Welcome Connor! Excited to see who the last piece is.

I was responding to a defeatist attitude (response) first of all. Second Municup, shouldn’t you be asking yourself that? Just sayin.

Honestly, it just came to me while I was typing it. I would have to think with all of the discussions that have taken place that someone else would have used it as well. In any event, feel free to use it with a small residual payment..lol

Agree there is middle ground in the way that just because the paradigm has shifted doesn’t spell the end for Evansville. We just have to change the model and expectations. There will be opportunities for Evansville to get good players that will more than likely use us for the next thing like Humrichous. There will be some guys that stay longer than they could have. There will be guys who step down to get PT and to put up numbers in order to step back up in P5. We shouldn’t feel defeated about the future but we would be better served to realize that the “loyalty” argument cuts both ways and the coaches/schools have had the upper hand for years and could show guys the door every year. The athletes have been year to year for a long time the paradigm has shifted to both players and teams are all on the same year to year arrangement. With that said lots of opportunities for Aces, it just won’t be like it used to be. I’m in upper half of my 50’s and definitely prefer the old days of guys staying 4/5 years in same program, but that genie is out of the bottle and not going to be out back in as far as I can tell. I feel Rags is much better suited to navigate us through the new world order than prior regimes, so we will see what we can do.

He may be one of the most likeable coaches out there. This community has poured a lot of resources into this program over the years, and I have to think we should have no problem running with anyone at our level. I don’t have a defeatist attitude. Quite the opposite in my opinion. I’ve been harping about NIL and the importance of it since the rule changed two years ago and hadn’t really seen anyone else on the board seem to get on board with agreeing on the importance of it until the last few months. I want nothing more than for us to all get on board with continuing to financially support the Aces through NIL so Rags has the support needed to win here. I’m glad Scott Shreffler and his group of alumni are working hard on getting us a real collective together and trying to crowd source money. They’re supposedly working on getting something set up where you can make monthly contributions to the collective and I will definitely be doing that. I will also definitely keep pushing for others to do that as well. It might not seem like much, but if we can find 1,000 people willing to contribute $20/month on average, that’s $240,000 a year for NIL. We’ve got around 2,000 season ticket holders, so I don’t think that’s an unreasonable aspiration. Obviously everyone’s financial situations are different, but I spend $200 a year on season tickets and would gladly spend the extra $240 to help us compete at the top of the MVC. Look at what ISU did last year by offering Ryan Conwell & Isaiah Swope $20k each and a leased Chevy Trailblazer. It’s still possible for us to assemble a great team every year and Rags can have success, but it’s going to take financial support from fans to get him there. Even with that, there’s never going to be enough financial support for us to keep guys who are getting offered $300k+ in the portal. I wouldn’t call that a defeatist attitude, that’s just reality. Blind optimism on a fan forum isn’t going to do anything to help make the program better in my opinion. But continually harping on the importance of NIL in this era can do something. In my opinion, the only defeatist attitudes I’ve seen on here are the people complaining about a lack of loyalty and how NIL is ruining the sport. We can either embrace it and give Rags what he needs to succeed, or we can get passed by and endure more seasons of futility.
