Aces take 2 of 3 from the haughty Nashville Brass Band Bruins before bumping into a sunny shadow ahead of a non-conference tussle with richly famous but hardly imposing Bulldog Boogie from Butler. That game is Tuesday at Bullfrog Field, not far from where Bobby Plump led Seton Hall to the title in '28. A photo of their ball field. Overwhelming atmosphere. Butler, in the Big East, which promotes natural rivalries, is 13-16. Highlight of their season was a 3-gamer at Bradley where they lost 18-5 and 21-11 around a 19-13 win. Cheesh, no pitching. They also lost to Hoosier College of Bloomington 22-3. I'd say, gettum on, gettum over, gettum in. After that, the Awesome Purples will come back to E-ville for a 3-game weekend bender against the other Bloomington, which is really in Normal, which is in Illinois. This will be a tough series and one the Aces need to win. Illy State is 17-11 with a big win this year (16-6) over the same team that beat Butler 22-3. The Birds just finished a sweep of Valpo, which isn't really a stunning achievement. They are 7-2 in the Valley. Danny Pacella is their best hitter with a 1.17 OPS. JT Sokolove has the best name in the MVC. Mark Shallenberger has restored his claim on being the best Aces hitter, one of the league's best, and a potential draft pick inside the 10th round. Brent Widder has found recent long-ball power. Chase Hug is getting into the groove. Kenton Deverman will likely be the staff ace moving forward, which is rare for a frosh lefty. From GPA-dot-com
Mark Shallenberger was named the Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week on Monday after helping the Purple Aces to three victories last week against Austin Peay and Belmont. It is Shallenberger's second MVC Player of the Week award in his UE career. Shallenberger hit a team-best .357 with three home runs and a team-best eight RBI in UE's four contests last week.

Illinois State should be a good test for us this weekend. They are 18-12 overall and tied for first place in the conference with a record of 7-2 (with Indiana State). They have won seven of their last eight games. With that said they have arguably played the three bottom teams in the conference (Bradley, Missouri State and Valpo). mvc-sports.com/standings.aspx?standings=62At 15-17 overall and 4-5 in the conference, we have a chance to get to .500 or better.

Shallenberger, whose Pom Pom mom is still leader of the pack, is also leading the Valley in hitting after last night's game against tne Normalities. Shally, who raked as well in the Northwoods Summer league last year, is at 1.26 OPS with 8 dingers. He has been hit by pitches 17 times. Shally missed a lot of the 2023 season with a broken bone in his hand, which makes his current scorch even more impressive.
Harrison Taubert is a new surprise, and he's hitting .339. He wasn't considered a candidate to start at season's genesis, and got a chance when Chase Hug got hurt. Some pieces had to move around for that to make sense.
Kip Fougerousse is at .319 and has been hot of late after a slump during the Murray and SIU series.
Now to get Simon Scherry off the stump and onto the bases.
Kenton Deverman is 6th in ERA (3.89) now after last night's twirl. Aces pitching overall has been pedestrian. It's getting better at the back end of the bullpen.

We are down 3-2 after six innings to Illinois State. Both starting pitchers have been solid with no walks or HBPs. Schultz has struck out seven though six and has only given up six hits, four for extra bases. Unfortunately all of the extra base hits have led to all of their three runs (two solo home runs and back to back doubles for the other run). Rumsey with a double drove in one run for us and Hord had a sac fly for the other run. Chase Hug has are only other extra base hit - a two out double in the sixth but was stranded. Five hits total for us. Need more offense (obviously). Would be a shame if we couldn’t pull out the win for Donovan Schultz as he has pitched well enough to win today. Not overpowering but very solid. stats.statbroadcast.com/mobile/?id=502731#

Wild pitches are a pitcher's worst enema.
Sweepum tomorrow. The middle of the conference is quite congested, depending on outcomes today.

A sweep would pull the Aces even with Normal College with a 7-5 record ahead of 3 next week at Peoria Institute, Bradley campus.
Looks like Shane Harris will get the ball Sunday, and he's been really solid lately. Was a bit surprised to see Scherry hitting in the 9 spot since he's been slumping. Anybody asked me, I put a slumping guy in the 8 spot and a hot hitter in the 9 spot. Taubert, Shally and Foug are all stinging the ball. Widder is scuffling a little.
Unrelated, the Misery State team, as we know shares their ballpark with the Springfield Cardinals and had to play a morning game Thursday and finish that series on Saturday because the Cardinals have first dibs on Sunday afternoon. UI-Chicago beat them two out of three.
In other news, Hulman College on the Wabash is looking for 6 wins in a row against Bradley today. They have been scoring a lot of runs, but that's hardly a surprise in the Valley. Playing those games at the Bob Warn cemetery annex. They go to Illy State next week. That could be pivotal.

Aces lead 8-0 after 5. Bats are producing and Harris has been sharp on the mound. This can be a very good week for the Aces.
