Living in metro Atlanta I keep a casual eye on the GA Tech and GA State men’s basketball teams. Last night GA State lost to hated rival GA Southern at home in the quarterfinals of the Sun Belt Conference tournament. Since 2009, the Sun Belt has held their entire conference tournament at a neutral site, most recently in New Orleans. This season, all conference tournament games prior to the semifinals (final four) were played on the campus of the higher seed. The semifinals and finals will be held at a neutral site in New Orleans. This format was announced a while back and was not a response to corona virus. With that being said, how would those of you out in Purple Ace Place Land feel if early round round MVC conference games were played on campus sites? Maybe the first round play-in games the Aces usually find themselves in played at campus sites on a Wednesday and maybe having the rest of Arch Madness in St Louis Friday to Sunday. I usually only watch Arch Madness games the Aces play in and during these games I see a large, mostly empty NHL arena, hosting the early round games. I’m sure St Louis has Arch Madness locked up for several years in the future though.

Not a practical solution in my opinion. Wednesday is normally the banquet and awards day. So 4 teams will miss those events, then spend Thursday traveling to get to St. Louis losing a practice day on Tuesday traveling to an on-campus game. The tournament is the culmination of the season, not the continuation of the season making a second trip to an on-campus site.

I’m not for one way or the other, just wanted to see how others felt. However, MVC conference tourney play could be spread out over two weeks since the regular season finishes a week earlier than most conferences anyways. There would be time to fit in an awards and banquet day. The on-campus games would be for the 7-10 seeds (maybe 9-12 if Murray and another school joins) that are unlikely to win the conference tournament. I was impressed with the atmosphere last night and don’t think it would have been as intense of a crowd reaction at a neutral site. Just saying, there’s something about an on-campus feeling when two teams’ seasons are on the line.
