very disappointing loss to Murray St tonight. (and that is an understatement.) We simply did not look good at all. Guilia played well, but needed help. Just a brutal loss and opening to conference play.
The road trips have taken their toll (we are 0-3 in morning games, and our team is leaving campus the night before.)
Our players and coaches need to step up and find a sense of urgency. But there are plenty of things that can be done to help them. We have only 2 non-conference games on campus. These ladies deserve better than that.

Bounced back with a nice win against Belmont. Cardona had 81 attacks, so clearly the strategy was to set everything to her, no matter where the ball was on the court. She was solid with only 6 errors and hitting .370% -- Ruff was steady as usual with 49 assist; and Chloe Cline seems to be a regular in the rotation now.
I was at the match and the Curb Center is a really nice facility, along with the rest of the campus. I believe for UE to take the next step for our women's volleyball and basketball we need upgraded facilities. Meeks is basically a high school gym and not very attractive for recruits coming in for a visit.

The VB team plays 7-4 Chicago State at 6 pm tonight at Meeks Family Fieldhouse. They beat us 3-0 in the Tennessee tournament a couple of weeks ago. This is the second of three contests against them. We play them a third time on October 23rd at their place. I like our chances tonight as we played Tennessee much tougher than they did. So a good chance for revenge tonight and to even the season series. But we will have to play well as Chicago State is pretty good. Live stats for tonight’s game: stats.statbroadcast.com/mobile/?id=477563Update: We lose to Chicago State again 3-0. They seem to have our number. So much for liking our chances tonight. gopurpleaces.com/news/2023/9/25/volleyball-aces-drop-monday-contest-to-chicago-state.aspx

Chicago State...a very good team in a tough situation with the college right now. Enrollment down, scholarships reduced, budget cuts required them to drop out of the WAC, and only 9 players available. With no conference play, they will only get in 21 matches this year, while most schools will have around 35.
#1 Yanlis Feliz was player of the year in the WAC in 2021 and she had a good match against us. The team is tall and it is evident they spend a lot of time on their blocking skills. They humbled Cardona several times.
Fernando and their coach are friends, so hence the reason we are playing them several times. Going up against them helps us in the long run.

Chicago State was tall and had some hops. We were totally overwhelmed in this match.

It's very bad to be swept twice in a season by a partially funded, conference-less program carrying only nine girls on the roster.

Their volleyball team is the exception to all their other sports programs. They have a very experienced and passionate coach that has managed to bring in talent from around the world. He just about won the conference every year at Florida A&M (21 seasons), then went 63-10 in 2 years at a Junior college before landing at Chicago St a few years ago.
They are 8-4, with 2 of those losses coming in the second match played on the same day. They definitely would finish in the top half of the Valley. Fernando just got back on Sunday, so maybe he will have a different strategy when we play them in October.

We lost to SIU tonight in four sets after winning the opening set. In the preseason coach’s poll we were picked fifth and SIU was picked fourth. /photo/1

Swept in 3 sets at Missouri State yesterday - not a good weekend road trip, only winning 1 set while dropping 6
As listed below, six straight weekends on the road to start the season, with 2 mid-week home games. Then this is followed by opening our home conference schedule with 2 of the best teams in the league, UNI and Drake. Not a recipe for a successful season. --
Cape Girardeau
Birmingham
Chicago Knoxville Murray/Belmont SIU/Missouri St.
Perusing all the other MVC teams, no one else has this type of schedule. The worst being 3 straight weekends on the road.
Hope this type of scheduling changes in the future.

UE suffered another 3-set loss last night at home against UNI….the hitting stats were very poor against a strong set of Panthers blockers.
Strange Stat - UE has 6 wins and 10 losses this season - in those 10 match losses, they have won 1 set combined and have been swept in nine matches! What is going on?
Next up is a home match against Drake, who may be the best team in the conference. They enter the match with an 11-6 record against a strong schedule and come off an impressive sweep win at Indiana State last night.

Thanks bballjunkie. It is very concerning. We only had eight points in the third set; at least the first two sets were reasonably close.

I wasn't able to go last night and tuned in on ESPN+ late in the third set. I'm starting to question the head coach. His interaction with the team seems to be very "alpha male" in nature. The expressions on the faces, and their joy in playing seem to have disappeared since his return. I watched an interaction between him and Guilia during the Chicago State match. I didn't think that lady ever stopped smiling and giggling on the court. No smiles during that game, and it looked like he was telling her she sucked. I don't know squat about volleyball but the chemistry seems off since his return.
