… Robert's hit for the cycle with a walk, that has to be very rare in baseball. It is very rare actually - only the second time in UE baseball history - and that is not including the walk, so probably never done in UE history before would be my guess. Also set the UE home run record for a single season. Here was Anthony’s comments: Big day for Evansville baseball’s Eric Roberts: - Ties the UE record for home runs in a single season - Becomes the second Purple Ace to ever hit the cycle

In 1940 Harry Craft of Cincinnati hit for what they called "a Super Cycle". It was hitting for the cycle,a walk, and a hit by pitch, only time it has been done in the major leagues. Here is a 2003 article breaking down the various super cycles. www.baseballprospectus.com/news/article/2169/aim-for-the-head-supercycles/“…Only nine times in 31 years has a player walked and hit for the cycle in the same game...” Presumably this 31 year MLB history would have been from approximately 1972-2003 and would be why the 1940 Harry Craft was not on the list. Looks like you have to go about 3 1/2 seasons for one player to have one. (And that is without the HBP.) This 2013 article when Mike Trout hit for the cycle: www.beyondtheboxscore.com/2013/5/23/4359718/mike-trout-cycle-super-mlbsays that he “became just the 17th player in MLB history to hit for the cycle and steal a base in the same game…” Some big names on both of these lists. Very rare, indeed for a “super cycle”. Here is a complete up-to-date list of all the MLB players who have hit for the cycle: www.mlb.com/news/players-who-hit-for-the-cycle-c265552018

If Roberts isn't in the top 3 for Valley POY, that's a sin. He's played right field, third base and pitched in relief -- sometimes in high leverage. Hit two homers on Tuesday in the game at IU -- 20 for the season, which is tied at the top for the single-season UE record. (Ed Kothera 1987). ** Ed Kothera was from Crystal Lake, Ill., and was part of a pretty good UE team from 1984-87, including one that had Andy Benes as the top pitcher in the country. Kothera did come to UE as a catcher and ended up playing 3rd base. What little I've read was that he was a masher without a lot of defensive ability. Aces played their games in Bosse Field in those days. Jim Brownlee was the head coach.

Weather ... not looking great (but not terrible) for today's game but Saturday is looking OK. I think they have a Sunday window to play if they get rain and it is a turf field.

I might be wrong, but early on till about 1985 we played at the corner of Walnut and Rotherwood, which is now a dorm. Centerfield would be where the softball field is now. Then in the mid 80s games were switched to Bosse Field. I vaguely remember playing Colt league games at UE during the summer.
1988 was the year Benes went from being pretty good to great...dropping his ERA from 3.30 to 1.35. Soccer was good too. Then Haffner put up his 65 in 1989.
Is Ziggy the guy to help bring back those days!

Not a good start for UE in game two of the series down 7-0 in the bottom of the third. Schultz is getting hammered. In 2 1/3 innings he has given up seven runs on six hits.
In the meantime we have 0 runs and 0 hits in three innings.
Update: Robert’s gets us on the board with a home run in the fourth inning. Now 7-1.

Earlier today Southern Illinois beat Murray State 11-4. Indiana State beat Missouri State by the same 11-4 score as well.

My bros-in law played for EC '69-73...most of their games were "travel ball," even going so far as driving their own vehicles to Pensacola, FL over Spring Break & scheduling games against other similar schools on OPEN complexes. You can see how far the NCAA game has grown over the past half-century.

You can see how far the NCAA game has grown over the past half-century. Realizing that they built a 30K seat stadium in Omaha for the CWS and no other baseball purpose, it's pretty clear many people take the game seriously. It's a whole lot more interesting, IMO, than High-A ball because the teams are actually trying to win games. Of course, High-A is affiliated and has the edge in branding.

Making a guy with a 6.28 ERA look like Greg Maddux. C'mon man!

Wow, Fougerousse with the bomb to go up 2-1. Listening on radio and that is first time I've ever heard Jevin act like an actual UE fan.

I am too nervous to watch the last of the 9th. Dang, Widder needs to make better contact.
