I had intended to create this thread last night but links to Illinois State kept bombing my browser, so that tells you something.
Anyhow, nuts and bolts.
Friday, game 1 6 p.m. at Sillynoise State.
Nick Smith will get the call against righthander (probably) Derek Salata, who got shelled last week in the Friday game against Carbondale Tech.
Other pitchers we see this weekend are Jayson Hibbard, Cam Mabee and probably Erik Kubiatowicz. All are righthanders. Kubiatowicz is their bullpen hammer. ERA's and individual numbers in small samples, it's hard to pin much to that. Salata gets a lot of K's but walks a few too many.
ISU is 6-12 in the Valley, a bit under .500 for the year and fresh off a 7-4 loss at home against Iowa. Iowa is 32-11, according to people who don't lie -- and that win gave them a split against the Redbirds. In a phrase, ISUr is much better than we think.
It's a small ball team with lefty outfielder Dan Pacella their only long ball threat. Of course, a ball to the fence is a double. Three of those = one home run and guy on 2nd base. JT Sokolove is a .450 OBP guy. Dangerous, that is.
Aces overall are slumping and maybe not as good as they were a month ago.
UE needs 2 wins this weekend.
Other games to watch that matter for the moment -- Moe and the Bears are playing Murray and the Horses.
Indiana State likely has the top seed in hand. SIU is vulnerable.

Redbirdz are much like Mo St, when the chips are down late season, they're always in the crunch. Hibbard is built like former Aces MLB star, Andy Benes @ 6'5" 245 and has a Conference ERA of 4.26...best on their staff. He's an Oregon St transfer.
I like Sokolove, simply because the name has that late 60's Martin & Rowan "Sock it to me baby" flavor! Every hitter needs that mentality @ the dish.

The bottom five in the MVC will be scratching and clawing over the next 3 weekends, as 2 teams will be eliminated from participating in the MVC tourney.

State series comes at a bad time for Peoria College. They need 3 wins and some help if they think 8th place is on their radar. Indiana State @ Bradley Southern Illinois @ Valparaiso (Valpo most likely will win 1, but not 2). Missouri State @ Murray State Belmont @ UIC (one of these guys will have at least 8 wins by Monday).

Looking back on this season the 3 game sweep at home against Belmont will be a thorn in UEs butt come seeding time.

You have become the professor of UE baseball. Thanks for the acknowledgement. I do enjoy baseball much more than other sports, mainly because springtime is a fun time and I was actually pretty good at baseball. Perhaps some of our angry fans could learn to appreciate the beauty of a sports program that has achieved where all others have failed.

UE baseball is a reason to smile and tamp down the loser feeling of being a basketball doormat. It is more than obvious that you connect to the game. If you continue to bringing awareness to the nuts and bolts of this team, it will be a boost to the recognition that they deserve year after year. Indiana is a basketball state, or so they say over and over. Teach us how to walk and eat Cracker Jacks.

Collegiate level baseball is quite good, better than the low minors for reasons that are less about the game than about the rosters. I think if the season was more into warmer months, it would gain a better footing. Having to take road trips to the South is probably great fun for the players in February but they are obviously at a disadvantage. Going 0-for-a road trip is the typical result.

The Top 25 is a list of southern schools with few exceptions. I'll take a wild guess that attendance is better in the South across the board. Not much we can do about the weather in February except jump on a bus.

Not much we can do about the weather in February except jump on a bus. SEC ballparks are better than most mid-level minor league stadiums. There are also college teams in the South you never heard of who are consistently better than most Northern teams. Mississippi State's Dudy Noble Field ... yeah, compete with this.

Troy is another example of a good Southern program. UE opened the season there and came away with 3 losses. Still, it was a great way to break the winter blues, watching baseball in February.
