This is the perfect move that could have been made given the situation. This encourages current players and recruits to stay by bringing in continuity, while bringing in a coach with major coaching experience and a tie to Indiana.
Let's go out tomorrow and make the headlines for our basketball and basketball only. This is a new era.

You never know how it's going to work out. I'm old enough to remember a coach who was going to launch the program into the stratosphere only to be canned halfway through his second season for sexual misconduct. Lickliter might not work, but I like the hire. It's certainly not one of the most ridiculous decisions I've ever seen.

Allows a well respected and noted veteran coach to whether the storm and hopefully allows him to mentor an assistant like TC to guide the program down the road.

Name a single college basketball program that's given a multi-year deal to a new coach in the middle of the current season. There are plenty of programs who have had to fire their coach in the middle of the year. You appoint your interim, take your time, do a national search, and announce the new guy when your team gets eliminated in March. That's how things work. We need a coach that's young and hungry, not a has-been who can't recruit and flopped at freaking Marion

Can't say I'm crazy about this hire. I also was hoping for someone young, and hungry. We shall see what happens.

In 6 six seasons at Butler, 3 conference championships, 4 tournament wins, 4 NCAA trips, 2 sweet 16. Are you friggin kidding me. He recruited these guys. All last year I told anyone that would listen Walter was the pretty face TL is the brains. I could not be happier.... tomorrow a donation!!!

Said it in the HC candidate thread, I wonder if he is just keeping the seat warm for a couple of seasons until TC is ready to take over.

We see what young and hungry got us, this is a safe, cheap and logical hire. I bet we don’t have a lot of money to pull from, so it may have simply came down to finances.

Steve Fisher Michigan 1989 I think he worked out pretty well. I can’t believe people are bashing Lickliter. Blame McCarty because he’s the one who screwed up here. Lickliter may be able to keep the roster nearly intact and keep the recruits committed. Starting over with a new coach would be a guaranteed 3 additional years of rebuilding.

Steve Fisher Michigan 1989 Fisher was the interim coach in 1989. He won the NCAA Tournament and was then given the full-time job. If Lickliter was hired to finish out the season and somehow won the NCAA... or hell, even managed to make the NCAA, I'd be all for hiring him full-time. As it stands, instead of waiting until March and getting a young guy who will rebuild the program in his image, we're getting a caretaker who will manage the decline. It's like electing an 85-year-old pope. Yeah, he's not going to shake anything up, but you're just waiting around for him to die.

Definitely surprised but not mad. I like how he has familiarity with the players
