I wish Sam would have an attitude adjustment. He hangs his head constantly, stands around on D, is late on 3 point challenges, and like KJ pouts about every call... in my opinion... he is the best athlete we have ever had, and the worst attitude. It could change on a dime, but it will take Sam to change Sam. Exactly. People need to rewatch the game and focus on his D (or lack thereof), rebounding, and reactions after TOs. It’s not good. There were new sets to the offense today and some worked well. KJ finished with either hand, some great interior passes. But ththat disappeared late and team reverted back to wrong guys tai3s late.

Very telling is right. Step up a few feet and hit the dam shots. They might just win.

Coach should give Sam an entire 40 minutes..don't yank him out for missed shots...he needs to be able to play this out, gain confidence, and not be afraid of being benched. I think the talent is there, but confidence is shattered and he is trying too hard. I still believe that he is going to be a star for the Aces. Sect...I view the situation with Sam differently. While I agree with you that Sam will be a star for the Aces, it's his attitude that gets him benched. Coach McCarty has always encouraged his players. I'll use John Hall as an example. As much as I (and several other Aces fans have pointed out) would like to see him limit his 3 point shooting, it's not going to happen. Coach is still going to have him take those shots. Sam on the other hand has had several opportunities to play it out and he will have a lot more. Sam sitting the bench is to remind him that the only thing really holding him back is his attitude. Sect, I apologize for editing your thoughts after the game. I edited your post to respond to that particular part of your post. I'm very sorry.

As far as players taking bad shots, some of that is because they don't have much continuity in the offense and often get the 'shoot before the clock expires'.
Another part is the defense forcing the Aces to go to shooters who are less optimal.
Hall is forcing 3-balls because he's not a player who's any good with his back to the glass. UE doesn't really even have such a player and DeAndre, when/if he returns, will get the shots Hall is taking now. DeAndre will be largely more effective because if the shot's not there, he can put the ball down and drive. Hall isn't that versatile. Hall should be playing defense and rebounding the offensive boards.
The 3-ball guys are supposed to be Frederking and maybe Somebody Else. Frederking is too slow, always was. Somebody Else is harder to identify.

I did and still do think the components of a top 75 team is setting up and down our bench. We're ranked 250 and falling. The gap between 75 and 250 is the direct result of what's going on between the ears. Players and coaching, and it's a blatant, lost opportunity, bold faced shame.

The gap between 75 and 250 is the direct result of what's going on between the ears. Players and coaching, and it's a blatant, lost opportunity, bold faced shame. I00% agree! I believe our talented players are underused (Art, Sam) and others are misused. I see, in Sam, a guy very upset with his play and down on himself, trying too hard and making mistakes because of that. I really believe he needs a lot of time to just play hard, and be allowed to work through all this. I don't think his play is selfish. I think he is frustrated that he can't "fix it" and needs time to do that. Hall should be playing under the basket..he looks like a big, he needs to play like it...rebound, block shots, be there for lay-ups from great passes like he was last night a couple of times. Stop those constant 3's! Art can be erratic, but he always plays with energy,,,he is wasted on the bench. I feel like there is way too much subbing, sometimes leaving us with no one on the court who can score. Poor play results often from the wrong people on the court, trying things they just don't do well. Coaching and the absence of Williams are a bad combination.

Lots of interesting takes on this thread regarding personnel. Here are my takes:
-6-26 from 3 is absurd. At some point, you have to get a shot from somewhere else on the floor. Coach and players both have this responsibility.
-I agree we need an inside presence. However the absence of our head coach is not the problem. Very few offensive possessions do we have someone inside...or get the ball in the post...in a 5-out offense. Deandre and Mccarty coming back doesn’t fix this unless adjustments are made. Again, my opinion is that we are running this offense to attract the players we need to run it. We are not doing it for this season.
-I agree Cunliffe is frustrated with himself. He has not played well. I do not believe he is “the best athlete we have ever had”. Nor do I think giving him a ton more playing time is the answer. Being frustrated with yourself is no excuse to cry to an official every time you turn the ball over, miss a shot, or don’t get a call. It’s no excuse to not play hard on defense. The answer isn’t more playing time. The questions every player needs to ask themselves is “why are you playing basketball”. And “what are you doing positive when you are on the floor”.
-Henderson needs more PT. Pure shooter with a ton of upside. Give him more time to develop.

Like I said the other day - this team just isn't capable of consistently making threes. We are now 32-136 from three (That is an abominable 23.5%). I don't care what type of offense you run that isn't going to get the job done. The inability to recruit shooters to this school continues to just leave me flabbergasted. I just don't get it - I understand issues recruiting certain types of players but there should be no problem recruiting shooters and high IQ players. That should be our bread and butter every year and yet we haven't had any success getting those types of players outside of very, very few examples in the last 20 years. Too many players who are supposedly "Great Athletes" who are always going to be outclassed by the other teams great athletes. That's the way it's always going to be so we have to beat teams with our ability to shoot, pass, think, and strong effort. We need to have a team like UNI and Drake have this year and the last couple years. Strong guards who can shoot and score (Green), many shooters, and a strong big guy. They don't have super athletes, but who cares??? They win and we haven't won since 1999. Our best years were 2016 and 2013 which ironically were the two years where we were the closest to what UNI and those types of teams are. I'm personally sick of hearing how super athletic recruits are - I just simply want a guard who can shoot, pass, think, and give effort. That's it. Substance always trumps style and the substance just hasn't been there for too long.
I will add - I'd take Williams on my team any day - he gives effort and he's smart and he's a phenomenal talent.

If we could channel Colt Ryan's mental grit and mindset into Sam Cunliffe you'd have a long and successful NBA career. He needs to go back and watch Colt's reaction when he got a bad no-call or something went south. He dug in, worked harder and responded. Never a deflated hissy fit, whining technical, or a attention getting profane scream.

Does anyone else just get so mad when they think of the potential of this season wasted? I waited so long for this season to start and I was so excited. Then Kentucky game, holy cow I thought we might actually make it back to the tourney. However, in true UE fashion, all goes to hell. Makes me so so so so so mad.

For sure when the Aces found somebody who was at least better than Shea Feehan, I thought ... yeah, this is a commitment to finding some tslent. I retain the belief that there are 4 or 5 really good players in this program, though it appears they wasted a scholarship on a couple of others -- Peace be All-World is the main one. There are plenty of teams that depend on the 3-ball to win games, so it's not a horrible offensive strategy. But if the shots they are taking are kissing the rim or missing the rim, we got us some problems in River City.
I will continue to enjoy watching the games to the cusp of wondering why. I don't feel like I got screwed but I appreciate that others might think that way. Eventually UE will be back in contention. They have been in worse shape than this.
