One has nothing to do with the other. Why would you think that, explain, It's not as if Antoine is taking a scholarship opening up by Evan graduating. Evan can return for another season if he chooses to, irregardless of this. To put it another way, there is room on the team for both of them. Signing another forward doesn't mean Evan is or is not coming back. He may choose to move on, but this won't be the reason why.

D1 to Year Off to JUCO and back to a struggling D1 program. That sequence is a red flag! I hope all of you who have trashed frequent fliers like Samari can at least remain silent if you can't be consistent. My days of rah-rahing over press releases are over. Been burned too many times. The notion that at 6-7 and 215 he is an inside presence by MVC standards is weak. I hope he's as great as many of us thought Trey Hall would be. I can't imagine that he'll be weaker athletically or softer than Levitch so it is a step up most likely. Still, we now have four JUCOs on the roster next year, Emmette, Iyen, Blaise and Antoine. One or two more wouldn't surprise me and/or plucking another upperclassman from the transfer portal. I don't think that's the "Butler Way" of building into the future and I don't think Lickliter is all that concerned about the future or what roster he leaves the next coach. It looks to me like a sign that he does indeed plan to ride into the sunset when his JUCOs graduate. He's banking that he'll go out a winner with a baling wire and duct tape team. Season tickets aren't all that cheap so I hope he's right for my sake.

Well, here comes whiskers right on cue (Oh Belvedere!!!! Woof!!!) to tell us why this player won’t be any good, and how our coach isn’t any good. Look, we get it. You don’t like him, don’t want him here, and every other such thing imaginable (although, you’re sure he is a nice guy.)
And love how you continually throw in your reference to your season tickets. I don’t understand something. Why get season tickets to see a team of players you don’t like play for a coach you don’t want here? I’m quite sure that someone would use those seats just the same. Save your money, please.

Transfers make sense, and at this point we just need talent no matter how it gets here. As far as evaluating current players, I would expect a lot of growth in the off-season for Iyen and Trey, as well as Alex - it’s a little early to pass judgment. For reference, Newton averaged 3 pts as a freshman and 5 as a sophomore. Also, there are a couple of players you forgot to denigrate.

I think this is the sort of player who will end up at a lot of mid-major programs. I am neither excited nor disappointed at this. The guy has some size on him and he apparently can shoot.

There are only two incoming freshmen, not three. They are Sisley and Boynton. Considering that Iyen will be a senior next year, let's hope that he does have a lot of growth in the off-season. However, references to Newton as a freshman and sophomore do not apply to someone who came in as a junior. I haven't denigrated anyone. Not Antoine. Not Deandre. Not Cunliffe. Not Artur. Not Ryan Taylor. Not Mislav. I have witnessed quite a bit of ongoing denigration here by others regarding those players and others. Are you squeaky clean in that regard?

I have not criticized any of our players. I wish those who have left well. I was sorry to see DeAndre go and I was sorry to see Sam go. I have certainly not called Levitch weak and soft. To me, that is denigrating him. I mean, he was our leading rebounder. I have not called it a red flag that someone wants to transfer to our program. Would all of our players then be somewhat suspect for wanting to play for Evansville? To me, you have portrayed Antoine in a negative light without really knowing anything. In today's landscape, most coaches make frequent use of transfers - partly because there are so many of them. And surely you know that coaches who inherit programs low on talent may use transfers even more.
You are right, Blaise is a juco transfer but eligibility-wise he will be a freshman, as everybody got an extra year. Iyen will be a senior but has 2 years of eligibility remaining. Whiskers, I actually agree with you more often than many on this board do, but your post seemed unusually harsh and negative. Maybe Lickliter has a master plan to win for the next two years and then let the program go to pot, but it seems a big reach to come to that conclusion.

The main problem is not that these guys are individual talents. Obviously there are dozens of players you would rather have if you want to compete for national tournament money.
The issue moving forward is more difficult to evaluate, that being a team of four or five new guys without any experience in a quality mid-major conference -- how will the coaching staff turn this into a team? We obviously think summer programs will help, but other than campus-life prep time, I'd wager all of them are quite familiar already with TL's game plan. He's likely already had a bunch of Zoom time with them, and has emailed the playbook to them all. The players have talked and they probably already know each other, their girlfriends, music tastes and what they do when the full moon rises.
They also know who is on the other teams, maybe even have Zoomed with those guys as well.
Just looking at dots, Antoine Smith knows a Balentine, who is obviously one of 'that' family. He didn't pull UE out of a box full of college names. I am hoping he believes he should be on this team. I have sensed in the past couple of years that some players weren't on that page.
Interesting times. The transfer portal is at 'max' right now and so far, I've only seen a few Valley names who have committed elsewhere. One from Bradley, plus those from Sicko State, who lived up to that name quite effectively, IMO. A couple of Ivy guys are coming to Loyola, which should be interesting as well but I think both of them are grad transfers.

I must admit I was not initially overly impressed with this signing. However, the more I read about this young man the more I am impressed with him. He sounds like an exceptional young man with a bright future. I expect him to be a solid contributor for the Aces the next couple of years and the likely replacement for Jax. Antoine Smith Jr. shows knack for history, promise for futureI also would not be surprised if we saw a front line with three of the following starting: Iyen, Evan, Sisley, Hall, Preston and Smith. Juwuan and Shamar are the likely starters at the guard position. But I don't think Noah is guaranteed a starting position. Of the big men I would say Hall and Preston would likely be fifth or sixth in the pecking order at the moment. To me it is more of a mental thing with Hall; if he really decided to commit to getting better this off season and do what the coaches ask of him the sky is the limit. We should have some really good competition on the front line this year. Imagine if we picked up Malevy Leons as well - the future would be even brighter. I am interested to get others opinions of Antoine. He definitely sounds like a guy who will provide a steady influence on and off the court.

Unlike a lot of Jucos, Antoine has played some D1 basketball, and he had a few times where he showed promise against competition. I like his frame, the fact that he had a decent rebound ave. as a JUCO, and......he HITS FREE THROWS. I HOPE he can be a Reed Jackson type of front court guy. It would be great to see an inspired, gritty team of Aces this coming season.
