Everyone,
Whew...the last few days have certainly been a whirlwind for all of us Aces fans. Now that the dust has settled a tad bit, I wanted to let everyone know what is going on here.
My first notification of anything going on with McCarty came a little after noon on Friday. It was a text from my daughter.."Do you know any of the details about McCarty?" My initial thought was he must of resigned, possibly taking a NBA gig. I pulled into the nearest parking lot. I didn't pull up a news page, I immediately went to PAF. The thread had just been started, and I learned what little we all knew. I finished what I was doing, and returned home a couple of hours later. Again, as soon as I got home, I rushed to the computer, and pulled up PAF. I figured I would be interacting with all of you quite a bit in the coming days. After supper, I again jumped on the computer, only to learn of another shocking development, the abrupt ending of PAF. PAF, the place where I had gone daily for years, was suddenly gone on one of the biggest news days this program has ever experienced.
I don't want to question the reasoning, nor do I want anyone else to. He ran a fantastic board for several years, and I am appreciative of those efforts. I don't want to over-dramatize a message board, but PAF had become our virtual watering hole for the last few years. We celebrated, pouted, agreed, disagreed, played contests, gave thousands of suggestions and opinions, and became a community. That board resulted in me personally meeting and getting to know some great Aces fans. Two bus trips last year, as well as watch parties are a direct result of ideas shared on that board. I can tell you people read what was posted. A few of us met with key admins last year, and PAF certainly came up. We know media members have actively participated in the past, and I hope that continues. I am sure opinions expressed on PAF have played a part in actions taken with the program, particularly in marketing and game presentation. It was truly one of the most active forums in the league.
All of this simply couldn't just disappear. I wanted to do something, but my highest computer achievement to date has been resetting my modem. I did some searching and found a place to create one quickly. I figured if nothing else, it could be a temporary home until we figured out what we are doing. The response has been fantastic. As of right now, we are up over 70 members. Not bad for a couple of days, without any real way to reach all of the PAF members. I can't tell you how happy I am when I see one of the old gang register. We may not have met in person, but we recognize screen names and feel a kinship. Again, we are all sitting around our regular tables discussing the Aces over beverages.
Since jumping into this thing, several people have contacted me offering help in moderating and technical support. That help will be utilized going forward. I have had messages from admins of other boards in the conference offering any help they could give. That is greatly appreciated. I saw a thread on the Murray board discussing our situation. A comment was made that is the problem when a board is ran by one person. It can come and go on a whim. I agree. I didn't do this to "run a board",rather, just to keep what we had going. As I said, there will be several people involved, and should one of us get a whim and walk away, the board will continue.
When creating this, I looked around at various boards in the league. One thing I really liked was on the Indiana State board, a forum called "Ye Olde Sycamore Pub". It is a forum where you can discuss anything off-topic. We have created one here called "The Flower Shop". For you youngsters, for years, the Forget-Me-Not Inn (now Turoni's East) was a popular bar for UE students and staff. The common nickname for it was The Flower Shop. Anything goes, as long as it is not vulgar, offensive or insulting to anyone. I thought about banning politics as that seems to always get ugly, but will let it go for now..please play nice.
A couple of other new items are pinned links to other Valley boards, as well as a link to E-Ville Ways. I like reading what is going on at other programs in the conference, and E-Ville Ways should be daily reading for all Aces fans. I will update the Valley links to include some media sources. There are a few good beat writers that are worth following. Todd Golden and Paul Oren are two that quickly come to mind.
We have secured the domain purpleaceplace.com, and this board (virtual pub) will evolve and improve in the coming months. Any and all suggestions are welcome and encouraged. Like I said, this isn't mine, it's all of ours. I am just the bartender on duty right now....with that...ring the bell, the bar is reopened, and the first round is on me. Cheers!
